Other 1/2 and I are thinking of tooling on down to the beautiful land down there to see what else we can see. We have seen the JD Distillery before and been to the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. Thinking of possibly seeing the white trash Mecca known as Memphis.

I have a Fla permit and have read all I can on PDO. Is there a 50% rule or the like for restaurants serving booze? Also how safe is Memphis -especially down near Beale St etc.? Condition Yellow / Orange

Anything else good to see or visit in the state. Any hidden or lesser known sites that are worth the trip?

Thank you

I have lived in Memphis my whole life. I grew up in North Memphis which is pretty rough so I carry most everywhere I go. Memphis is one of those cities that on one block of a street will be very nice homes, the next block crack houses. So you have to pay attention to your surroundings, especially at night. You can't legally carry on Beale as it is considered an open bar, but there are a lot of police so it shouldn't be a problem. There are a ton of clubs up and down Beale St. good music, not just blues, but rock, jazz, neo-soul, it all just depends on what night your down there. Peabody Place is also pretty nice, it is a Mall, but it has some good restaurants a huge movie theater and a place called Gillians which is kinda like a grown-ups arcade. I have been hanging out down there since I was 13, and have never felt scared for my life, but I have always carried a knife. There is no carry in any place that serves alcohol. If I am not drinking I usually carry anyway. That is not saying you should, by any means, just that I personally do. There are a lot of panhandlers downtown, sometimes they can be pestering, but in my experience, not aggressive. As long as you have a weapon in your car and you keep your awareness up while driving around the city you should be fine. If you get a chance on the way through TN I would try to stop at Fall Creek Falls State Park, beautiful waterfalls great hiking trails, some of my happiest memories were had up there. Feel free to message me if you do come to town, I can point you in the direction of good food and drink.

Personally, I find the term "white trash" very unsettling. Not only in it's intended use towards lower class poor white people, but in it's implications that other races and ethnicities are only equal to these second class whites. Since when has Memphis been thought of as a white trash mecca anyway, the only reason I could think anyone would say that is that Graceland is in Memphis and there is some sort of yearly semi-religious flood of Elvis Fanatics to our city.

All apologies for the rant, that term just personally bothers me, many of my friends and family proudly embrace the label “white trash” I personally do not.

I go to Memphis couple of times a year and I never thought of going to Graceland until recently. I stayed away because of all of my notions that it was tacky, made for old women, etc.

I have been to Graceland twice now and I recommend it. It is interesting to see because the decor is literally straight out of the 70's. Elvis' tv room has 3 smaller set in the wall and the sets have knobs! When was the last time you saw knobs on a tv? How about a white shag bed? Also, understand that this was his idea of style and luxury. Since rich folks had call buttons in their dining room, Elvis had one too. Even though the kitchen is 10 feet away.

I think most people are impressed when they see his hall of golden records or his charity contributions.

To fit THR requirements: Elvis had an interest in firearms and there are a couple on display. Get the tour package to see the planes and cars also, oh and step on the white carpet in the living room or kitchen. Nice.

More often than not, when those of us who consider ourselves rednecks use the term 'white trash' it's self-mockery. Making fun of ourselves for being... NASCAR fans, wanting to go to Graceland, owning a baseball cap that says "Who farted?", that sort of thing. It's intended as self-deprecating humor - especially in this instance, where it's coming from someone who is wanting to visit Memphis themselves.

Unfortunately, the text-based communication of a forum doesn't carry humorous overtones very well, and the term can be easily misconstrued.

Oh, and as far as visiting Memphis is concerned... I've always found it to be a lot like Nashville, Vegas and (formerly) New Orleans, in that the tourist-oriented areas of those cities are very nice, but as soon as you try to get away from the 'beaten path', you find yourself in an armpit.

Calm down fellas. The guy's a YANKEE and don't know no better. Anyways, he's referrn' to folks from Iowa that make a pilgrimage to Grace Land.:neener:

If you enjoy jazz and blues you'll have a lot of fun in Memphis. Barbeque is blissful.

If you like country music glitz, Nashville will make you grin (as long as you're not sitting in traffic on the highway).

Knoxville/Maryville/Oak Ridge has a wide spectrum of things of interest from art museums to bluegrass to science museums and tours of the old atomic bomb works. Oak Ridge still has more PhDs per capita than any other city in the U.S.

No carry where alcohol is consumed on site.

If you decide to go to Nashville let Oleg know. If you come to Knoxville let me know.

Seeing as how the focus of this thread has changed to a non-topical issue, I'm closing it.

PMs pending. IAJack intended subject was on topic, though, and I hope he tries a Part II to get a satisfactory answer.
