Mailing a firearm to a dealer in another state in the morning.

Heres the question, I've been reading horror stories about the things that can go wrong with this. Could we get a sticky in this forum with links provided to the good information about shipping? I believe the post office really should have a quick reference guide for this but the best I can discover they don't. The ATF info is the best and it is stickied here but the post office references would help. There are also dozens of posts already in this forum on the issue. Is it ready for a sticky yet?

To put the problem in perspective, I stopped at the Bowling Green KY post office main branch and a lady in a suit who was introduced as the manager told me and I quote,"It is illegal for a non-licensee to ship a firearm through the mail, and even they must remove the firing pin." I know from my research that this wrong, but Good Lord, how does she work there and believe this? The question I still have regarding my transaction tomorrow is whether or not to inform the post office of the contents of the package (I know not to mark it), I've found what appear to be reliable sources with conflicting information on this.

Quote: "Show me the section of the DMM where it says that, would you please?" End of discussion. DMM = Domestic Mail Manual, their bible.

1) If it is a long gun, you are good to go, provided you are shipping to an FFL. If it is a hand gun, do not pass go, do not collect $200, you can't ship that via the mail.

2) Like he said above ... "Ma'am, please show me where it says that." If she balks, get her name and write a little letter to the PostMaster. If she -is- the post master, drop a similar letter to the Postal Service IG.

Then go to the next nearest post office.

...how does she work there and believe this?
Simple really, when you haven't performed a task often enough to learn the ins and outs of it, you don't really know HOW it can/should be done. Also, when you don't really WANT to perform a task, it is easier to brush off the nuisance than to complete the job.

success

So I went back to the same post office equipped with the appropriate pages from their manual. Told them what it was, offered to sign a statement that it wasn't loaded. They read through the materials I provided and agreed to mail it. Shame I had to do that, but it worked.
