In response to my status message about Heller and individual rights, a friend of mine from high school posted this:

The "right" to own a concealable-sized weapon that is the preferred weapon of choice for gangsters in my backyard?

I was pretty nearly speechless. Keep in mind that this guy was a conservative in high school, voted for Alan Keyes in the 2000 Republican primary, and is currently in the US Navy and stationed in DC.

You might point out that the ruling specifically upheld the prohibition on possession by felons. I would follow that up with a "So you are saying that it is a bad thing *I* have the right and felons don't?"

Simply reply with "yes."

Then ask him why he thinks he has a right to own a computer that is the preferred tool of choice for many hackers?

my buddy is home from iraq. good times.

none of my friends know anything about heller so i didn't bother changing my status.

edit: woooo number 800.

I was wondering about the gangbangers in his backyard, too. I can only assume he was exaggerating a bit. I wound up leaving him a message comparing the Second Amendment to the First Amendment. I resisted the urge to tell him that I didn't realize that the Bill of Rights was a Glock Free Zone.

(Well, okay, probably Lorcin Free Zone, but whatever)

Wasn't on Facebook, but I got posts like this:

I like the ideas of the populace having guns, especially since criminals already have guns illegally.
When a government has all the weapons, and the people have none, that government is in complete control.
A citizen without the right to protection is a subject.
(sarcastic)But if we ban guns then all crime would stop.
And my favorite:
Supreme Court bans execution of molesters; Supreme Court protects second amendment gun rights; Supreme Court implicitly supports vigilante justice.

Which amazed me because most of them came from people that I would consider to be "liberals."

No, simply the right of you to own a weapon to defend yourself without becoming a criminal in doing so. The bad element has always had weapons and always will, this doesn't affect them one iota. Your options are to level the field, or be at a constant disadvantage.
