A friend of mine was throwing away a whole box of covers for cooking pots. I grabbed them and figured I'd drill a hole near an edge, dremel off the handle and screw at the top and paint them orange to hang for reactive targets.

The only concern I have is are they safe to shoot? They are very thin steel, but are concave. Should I hang the rounded out side towards or away from the shooter?

I figured I's shoot these with 7.62x39, .223 and .308 at 100 yards. Maybe shoot one of the smaller ones with 22lr and 9mm out of pistols at 25 yards.

Will they work as targets? I don't see why not, but you won't get that "Klang" that your looking for. All the rounds that you listed except the .22lr will probably go right through them unless they are very thick pot lids. Their life will be rather short as they fill up with holes, but should make decent targets since you got them cheep.

Also, cast iron lids may shatter when hit so stay back, steel lids are less likely to shatter.

Everything is ok except the .22lr, It will most likely be alright but if you do get that one shot that hits just wrong on the lip and spins around, it can come flying back at you, 99.99 percent sure it won't happen, but be aware that it can, my buddy (long known for shooting inappropriate targets at my other buddy's ranches dumpsite) had an interesting experiance one time with a really cheep skillet, most punched right through but one of em didn't and went whistling back past him.

another one to REALLY avoid is automotive rims, but thats a different story.

Dunno about automotive rims, but school bus brake drums are downright dangerous, if you have the cavity facing you. :banghead:

Sounds like fun! My wife thinks I'm a junk collector, the way I pile up steel coffee cans, old pans etc in boxes in the garage.
