reloading for a AR and .55 gr M193 bullets, so far used varget, and now going to a gun show and plan on buying 8 lbs of powder. My problem is my reloading friends are recommending BLC2. so before I put out a bunch of money which one works best for everyday plinking?

BL(C)-2, H335, W748, and Ramshot TAC are all good ball powders that can be used for 55gr (and other) plinking loads in .223. Ramshot powders are often a few $ cheaper and are just as good as the more popular powders.

My last keg was H335 because that's what was in stock.

Sounds good to me...

I would also add AA2460 and AA2230 to the list...

H335 and AA2230 perform almost identically. Good 'tweener powder as far as burn rates go.

Both are faster than Varget and BL-(C)2.

How long is your barrel?

i like varget and blc2. varget gives me a better meter and accuracy but blc is generally cheaper here.

i shoot varget with heavier bullets... 69g 80g SMK.
for 55g i shoot whatever's cheapest, which has been accurate data powders.

This same thread pops up about every two weeks. Do a search (if it works). You'll find about six or eight powders that all seems to work equally well depending on who you ask. Varget, H322, H335, Benchmark, AA2230 (made for the 223), 748, TAC etc. I strongly suspect the bullet itself makes as much or more difference than the powder.

you can't go wrong with 25 gr of H335 behind a 55 gr. FMJBT...

many people have put this out as their best powder/load for M193 clones.

I just worked it up myself and my first 8# keg will definitely be H335 to feed my hungry AR

Ive had really good luck with H335 with various weight and type bullets. I even went shoting several times at 0 degrees this winter without issue.

What powder works really well with the Dillon powder measure? I hear varget is difficult to work with in dillons.

VihtaVuori will be hard to get I think. They supply all the powder for NATO. I saw the last one pounder about 4 mths ago and tried to buy some off the Internet, I ended up with Varget. I just finished loading some test .308's, 38.4, 39.9 and 41.0. I'll be testing it tomorrow.

You can always buy some surplus WC-844 or 846.

where?? all the places I normally buy have been out for at least a year

powdervalley has almost all VV powders in stock.

ball powders

I like H4895 and Varget. Haven't shot enough H322 yet to say but so far so good.

After milling the inside of the DPM it drops +.1/-.15gr. with Varget and H4895. I'm okay with that. Varget may be just a little better than 4895 for me.
