A 22 cal bullet travels a good ways down the barrel before peak pressure is achieved, and faster powder seems to work best in my .223, with less muzzle upset and wasted power. I would note that the military saw fit to use IMR 3031 in the original M193 ball ammo intended for use with short M16 barrels. Burns very clean in my rifle. Quiet, too!
