I have some 25 yro. IMR 4831. It smells good, but I get a fine red dust in the funnel. I loaded some 308 with it and got some decent groups. Should I still despose of it? Is red dust sign of a potential safety issue?

The powder is braking down

The powder is braking down. I just shoot mine up when it gts like that. I've never had a problem and I've shot a lot of it. It get weaked as it ages so no problem. Just don't breath it in as it's very bad to breath.

Get rid of it. It's in the first stage of decompostion. You may lot some cases now with this powder and try to fire them in the future. Result? A nice bill from your gunsmith to remove that stuck bullet...or worse.

I agree with all of the above posts. It's breaking down, you shouldn't use it and it is too slow a powder for the .308 anyway.
