I wondered the same whenever I see mounds of factory new spent brass at the range.

But according to range staff, violent crimes have increased over 80%+ the past year for our city and more people are buying guns/getting CCW permits at record setting pace and practicing with factory ammo. I guess life has priorities no matter what the cost.

I do see 22LR ammo in stock but at higher prices. I was reluctant but glad to.pay $5 for 50 rounds. Heck, I can reload lead 9mm rounds for that price! :D

That used to be the case but thanks to the internet, narrowing powder selection is done much faster now.

In my case it's just the opposite. I spend the time and effort to research a bullet and a powder, work it up to a very accurate load that works very well in my guns and for the purpose at hand, and then someone else posts about how great "XYZ" powder works with a 240gr JSP. The handloader in me says...."damn, I gotta try that!":banghead:

I used to keep 6 months to 1 year supply but after the last shortage, I increased my stock to 3-5 years and used tax refund money to buy components when they went on sale at good prices.

It's the new normal for many.

Yes, me too. But everyone suddenly buying ten times as much ammo and components as they used to without the manufacturers upping their production by 10X means shortages and price gouging. Add to that all those new to the sport. Like the last shortage, I'm sure production will eventually catch up, but just like last time, I doubt prices will ever go back to where they were. The new higher price will be the "new normal".:cuss:

It's the same as gasoline. It goes way up so we are used to it and feel like we got a deal when it went down .02cents:rolleyes:

I have enough reloading supplies for handgun and small rifle but would like some more large rifle powder and LR primers as I just started shooting more of that.

We have no LGS that sells reloading and if I find something online it has a limit of 2 lbs of powder or 2K primers. Not worth the haz mat and shipping. So heck with them. I'll shoot something else,.

Schwing,
Dont let the "its all your fault" crowd get to you. Ive started shooting this year and had no supplies and i heard a bit of that too. Most people understand though, that you gotta do what you gotta do. you dont have to apologize, "let your heart be glad" that you're trying to help folks out

I don't feel bad about it at all. Most long-time reloaders and shooters are nothing but helpful and are an enormous source of good information and tips. Some of the great loads that I use right now are from folks who paved the way. There is a small but vocal crowd, however, that feel that there should be some kind of mandatory second-class citizen status assigned to new reloaders/shooters and that they should somehow be required to wait at the end of the line and be rationed in what they are allowed to buy... Good luck with that. The fellow who has done it for 30 years has no greater entitlement to anything than the young guy who is at the range for the first time.

I have been shooting for 30 years now and just got tired of the ammo sticker shock. Any reloaders who feel that new folks are somehow to blame need to look in their own stores to see the hypocrisy there. I know a lot of long time reloaders. Every single one of them has a huge cash of supplies etc that puts mine to shame. I would bet that, with very few exceptions, those reloaders who don’t have a stash are kicking themselves right now and many are doing so in the form of complaining about the new guys. I fully intend to keep building up my supplies until I have about a 3 year reserve of everything. I used to do the same with my factory ammo which, in the case of .22s, has paid off enormously. Some of t he powder I used early on was a result of a .22 trade.

I just scored 96# of WC844; no hazmat; no shipping charges @ $7.50 per #. Glad to get it, and I don't feel overstocked. That's about 28k .223s. ;)
