Greetings All,

I have been looking for a comparison or usage chart that would show what primers (brand and type) would be appropriate for which powders (brand and type). I know this may be case dependent, for now I am interested in .243 Win.

Anybody know of a resource for this information?

Thanks

Anybody know of a resource for this information?

The powder manufacturers usually publish this on their websites.

The possible combinations of powder/bullet/brass/primer mixtures makes putting together a simple chart an impossible task I'm afraid.

The way I do it is to start with what caliber (you said .243) and what specific bullet I want to use then back into the powder/primer choices from that.

I don't care much about what powder I use but I nearly always have a preference for the bullet.

There is no known correlation between powder and primer brand.

In general, ball or sperical powder uses Mag primers, but other then that, no.

So, a chart is impossible.

Reloading manuals tell you only what brand & type of primer was used during load testing.

But they don't tell you that primer is the best one in your rifle.

And I very much agree with TexasRifleman.
A good bullet is what you really need to worry about.

Not so much the powder, and certainly not the primer.

Thanks All for the info...

I have found many powder burn rate charts and primer "heat" charts and a few words about when to use mag primers with certain powders, or more importantly, when NOT to use a mag primers.

So, it sounds as if it really doesn't make that much of a difference if I use a Rem 9 1/2 or a Fed 210, mag or not other then what rcmodel suggested.

Here is an example. I recently loaded some Win Super .243 cases with Barns 62gr VG and 38.4gr of 4895 and same with 40.2gr. The 40.2gr rounds grouped much better at 100yrds then did the other loads. However, I have no idea what primers were used because the cases I used were pri-primed by someone else....I guess what is suggested is it shouldn't make a difference if I use any standard large rifle primer...I should get similar results.

I guess I will just load up a few more test round with the primers I have and see where they fall...
