Powell has submitted his resignation

this is a man i respect guess every one knew he was going to resign
look for rumsfeld and possibly cheny to resign b4 inauguration
 
I don't see Cheney resigning until a year or two into Bush's second term. Meanwhile, the struggle for succession to Bush will be going on. I suspect in 2006 or 2007 we'll see Cheney resign for reasons of health, and another VP appointed by Bush. That person will be his heir apparent to run for the Presidency in 2008.

The infighting might get really, really nasty until then... :evil:
 
I must be nearly alone in not being too broken up about Powell leaving.

The guy that REALLY needs to be gone from the cabinet is Transportation Secretary Norman Minetta - this Klinton holdover has screwed up so often and so badly he should've had his backside kicked a long time ago. (As a reminder, shortly before 9/11 he issued a directive PROHIBITING airport security from giving extra scrutiny to middle-eastern men, and he's been a steadfast opponent of arming pilots. BUT he's a minority, so PC says he can do no wrong . . . )

The immediate question is who is going to be Secretary of State? That's a VERY high profile position. And it is going to continue to be VERY important with all the stuff going on in the Middle East. We need somebody REALLY good there. They have to be smart and well educated but they also really need to have a few decades of diplomatic experience. Most "non-diplomats" haven't worked out very well as Secretary of State.

That makes it tough for Rice. I don't know if she has the skill set for it. Even if she COULD do it, she might get very frustrated with the way diplomacy has to be done. The "dance" is as important as the "meat" and lots of smart, educated people get very, very tired of the process.

I don't think I have a recommendation at this time. Not enough information. Smart. Well educated. Well traveled. Hopefully a few foreign language skills. Lots of experience in negotiations and/or diplomacy. Patient.

I'm sad to see him go. I have a lot of respect for him as a person and as a former soldier. I disagree with him politically in some areas but that doesn't dampen my respect. I think he was wrong to advise the Bush Administration to try to go through the UN before we went into Iraq but hindsight is always 20/20.

He's a great speaker. He's dead honest. I hate to see people like that leave govenment. I think we will be seeing him again somewhere down the road.

I'm guessing those who are glad to see Powell go are a small minority. The man has dedicated his life to his country and is a true patriot. I believe there will come a time when the U.S. regrets abandoning the Powell Doctrine (Never enter a conflict without an exit strategy).

Well said, Gregg. I definitely concur. He was a great leader as a soldier and definitely cared about his troops.

No Secretary of State has ever been able to clean out or reform the State Department. Those employees are federal civil service employees. Have you ever tried to get rid of a civil serice employee? Someone (I wish I could remember who it was) stated that fighting the State Department was like ramming your fist into a big tub of lard. You pull your fist out and in five minutes, you can't even tell you hit it.

bush 1 told iraqis to rebel against saddam and we would support them militarily but when we started seeing posters of khomeine from iran popping up all over we let saddam butcher them. yet another reason they hate us

and i only see one problem with rice that is the muslims may not respect her
shes uber smart her ties to big oil might hurt her too
