Power case trimmer

I have been putting off reloading rifle after the last time I trimmed 500 308 cases with a lee trimmer. Now I have 5000+ 223 and 2000+ 308 cases to do. So I have been thinking about getting the dillon press mounted trimmer or a giraud or something and was looking for a little advice.

Prices is always a concern however my time is worth $$$ as well.

Take a look at the Little crow gun works WFT. I use mine in a drill press and it trims plenty fast for me. It indexes off the case shoulder so it is not the most exact trimmer around, but mine costed around $65.00, but was a gift to me from the wife.

I did 1,000 .223 cases in a drill press with a Lee trimmer the last time I did and trimming like that.

Took a couple of hours as fast as I could pick them up and throw them in a bucket.

Use the drill press table for the depth stop with the Lee cutter pilot, and hand hold the cases from spinning.

A $300 buck drill press and a $7 buck Lee trimmer pilot cutter is a whole lot more useful to have around all the time then a $307 buck power case trimmer.

I just did 2000+ .223 cases in about 90 minutes on my dillon 1050 with a rf1200 trimmer.

The trimmer will work on most progressive presses.

Remember, the RT1200 will both size and trim cases as fast as you can feed them in. I have one and wouldn't take a million bucks for it. Well, maybe a million...........How backordered is Dillon these days?

i'm with RC on this one. i use a possum hollow trimmer in a bench-top drill press i found on craigslist. every workshop needs a drill press. just sucks to have to chamfer and deburr in separate steps. the giraud does everything at once, but i've got more time than money right now, so i'll stick with the possum hollow and the cheap RCBS chamfer/deburr tool.

I'm not arguing against any recommendations mentioned thus far, but the Giraud is the "gold standard" for power trimming, IMO.

Extremely fast, and for maybe another $75 you can get another cutter and case holder for your second caliber.

(And, though the mechanical engineer who makes them probably isn't getting rich on his side business, the price does make one suspect there is gold being used in the trimmer, somewhere...)

I bought the CTS trimmer from the guy on Ebay, maybe he will make you a deal on the 223 and the 308, I don't know, but it doesnt' hurt to ask. After set up, every case cut right to 1.75. I only did 900 so I don't know how it will do on 901, but I think it will be alright. totoal cost was 45 bucks or something. still have to chafer and Debur, but oh well. I just take the CTS out and the put the chamfer tool in the drill and go for it. Makes it easy to remove the military crimp also

+1 for the cts I bought one the other day and I don't know how I lived without it.

Ok, here is a another simple trimmer for those who don't want to spend a lot of money.
You start out with a Lee case length trimmer.
You will need to drill a hole in the center of the one die. And then thread it into 8/32 thread as seen in the picture.

I use a RCBS case prep machine.
Works great, on takes a second or so per case.

I think the reason why I never went with the Lee trimmer is that I like to trim after resizing and priming, so I have a "full" primer pocket.

For those who use a hand primer, or prime after trimming, the Lee trimmer is an option.

I highly recommend the Giraud. I can sustain a rate of 14-15 a minute for the long haul, and it consistently trims to within .001. The main drawback is that its fairly expensive. Theres lots of good advise here, and any of the suggestions should work for you. And I agree that a drill press is really nice to have around! Lightman
