Well, tonight New Yorkers are in the dark. Thankfully, things seem to be "calm" as they possbily could be. But I wonder how many of these New Yorkers are feeling as far as their safety is concerned when they're sitting in their dark apartments, stranded somewhere in the city, or trying to get home. I'll admit I'm hoping it'll open some people's eyes regarding their own personal protection and that the authorities can't possibly protect everyone esp. in situations like these.

Again, I pray people in the NorthEast can maintain civility but again better to be armed than not at all.

Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing and Kalamazoo, all cities in downstate Michigan, are without power tonight too.

I doubt we'll be affected so far north but stocking up on batteries, flashlights, canned food, water and other drinkables, sounds like an even better idea today than it did yesterday. (Maybe some more ammo too.)

So far, I have been pleasantly surprised that the resident population has not reverted to their normal MO,ie burning, looting, and stealing TVs. Then again, the night is still young and the temperatures are declining. There is always tomorrow, and if the past is a predictor of the future, the only truly prepared will be the Asian shopkeepers,

FIRST RULE OF GUNFIGHTING, HAVE A GUN.

SECOND RULE OF GUNFIGHTING, HAVE 2 GUNS!!!!

Ian11, I had some of the very same thoughts and even mentioned this subject to my wife before heading into work tonight. Thanks for posting this, I had planned on bringing this up tonight but you beat me to it:D

If the riots following the Rodney King verdict didn't open peoples eyes to the need for self-protection, there is little hope the blackout will do any better.

it's pretty mild seeing those pictures on the news. i wonderd about the looting too. surprised none has happened.

Call me paranoid but I'd be holed up in my house with my homeland defense rifle hoping a looting mob didn't wander by if this happened here...

Nope, it won't make a difference. They might think about for awhile, but eventually things will get back to normal and they'll start worrying about what Paula Abdul will be wearing on the next "American Idol".

(Guess I don't have much faith in the sheeple).

It's amazing...I'm still scanning the reports, but the only serious looting I've found in the media (yeah, I know- get a more reliable source) is in Canada.

Peaceful, happy Canada.

So far, I'm almost impressed.

Regards,
Rabbit.

Coincidentally... I just watched The Trigger Effect the other day. Not that great of a movie, but it was fun to watch with someone who isn't as "preparedness minded" as I am and then discuss it afterwards.

ACP230, you'll love this battery purchase...

Since we have winter power problems as a matter of course, we went to wood heat immediately upon getting our house, taking care of three problems:
heat in the winter, spare time in the summer, and my exercise, since I get to do 10 cords or so from the graphel load I buy each year.

When we got ahead a bit, I put in dual inverters along with 32 6 volt/415 amp hour, deep cycle batteries (which, of course, forms the basis for a solar/wind system when we next get fat). This yields 3.5 days of power, given that I run the whole house as usual, much more if I only run essential (furnace for hot water, kitchen for the coffee pot, well pump for water, and the computer just because...).

That solved the female/winter bathroom problem, and, even better, we don't even know when the remainder of the world has a power outage!

The backout is providing more fuel for our fantasies of holding off the rampaging hordes of looters ...

You know this is a catch 22. If people go nuts and loot, rob, steal, etc. then citizens obviously need arms to defend themselves. If no such mayhem happens, the citizens are obviously by and large good decent people who can be trusted with such weighty responsibilities as owning weapons.

The antis wrong either way! LOL

Being really close to NYC, I must say that the city has changed since 9-11. I was heartened to see that New Yorkers can keep it together and help each other out when they need to. Also, the PD deployed over 10,000 cops, and even brought the cadets out to help out on the streets. I must say, it was still comforting to know I could defend myself in my home if necessary.

And remember the recent threads about laws cracking down on firearms during times of emergencies....

Its simple to a leftist: if firearms are not allowed off of ones' property, no one will be able to go looting...:D

Power's back on here now. I'm eight miles south of the Detroit city limit.

Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick claimed there were only 88 felony arrests in Detroit last night, which is apparantly about average.
