So, I've been using Power Pistol for the last 1.5 years or so, and it's always been in this package. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/2184462668/alliant-power-pistol-smokeless-powder

I also see it in stores in that package as well.

Anyway, a local store has some Power Pistol for a really good price, but it's packaged in this packaging. http://www.alliantpowder.com/products/powder/power_pistol.aspx

Anyone know the difference between the two labels? Is the second one just a newer package? Is it identical powder?

The second link you posted is the new packaging.

Midway probably is shipping the new powder and hasn't changed the picture on the web yet.

Regardless of that, it's all the same thing, using the same data.

No powder company is going to change a powder significantly and keep using the same name on it.

(Well Accurate might have, but thats a different story!)

A short while back Alliant changed all the labels on their powder jugs. Like rc said, "No powder company is going to change a powder significantly and keep using the same name on it."

My LGS said that Alliant is changing the packaging on all their powder and has been in the process for months.

He said it has alot of his customers pretty confused but it's the same stuff as before.

And yet we are told daily on the internet and monthly in the gunzines that we must use "current data" because the makers change the specifications at the drop of a hat.

That's what I expected, but I know there have been rare cases where powder companies have changed the recipe and kept the name. I didn't think this was one of those, but I wanted to make sure. I also wanted to make sure this was new packaging, and not some super old stuff.

Which powder was significantly changed and the same name was kept?

Accurate arms has used three (at least) different suppliers for some of their powders. The one I'm most familiar with it Accurate#5. And accuracy has fallen each time, at least in my experience.....

Also, some other powders have changed through the years, most notable #2400 has gotten a "little" faster, and BlueDot also has gotten a bit faster/touchier for high end handgun loads. (particularily 10mm and .357magnum w/125gr bullets).

But, I too have seen the "New" Alliant packaging.... Really old powder will have "Hercules" packaging. Anything "Alliant" is NEW.... at least to me...
