WOW... The sound effects of the gun going off probably could have been added in pretty easily, but how about the smoke when he shoots?
Well, note that there is a edit before he peeks into the cannister and pulls out his weapon, in fact there are multiple edit skips before he draws and fires. Simple matter to stop the camera and pull the guy out before entering the sequence of fire. Use decent blank ammo and there you go, one psycho who can't take a joke firing with full smoke/sound into a mail box.

That's some funny stuff. However, that is probably the reason most mailboxes aren't designed like that (at least, most that I've seen).

The music made it so whimsical!
There are homeless people down on Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco that have their own "gags". One of them hides in those public aesthetically pleasing garbage bins with roofs that hide the actual tin can inside. The homeless guy pops out and scares you, then asks for money.
One time a guy who knew there was a homeless man hiding in one snuck up with a big stick, whacked the top of the garbage can's roof as hard as he can and made a loud BANG that must of been very loud for the guy hiding inside. The homeless guy inside got so scared he jumped up out of reflex and banged his head on the ceiling of the roof deal, then fell out the access panel onto the sidewalk
