my brother has my dad's (he has passed away) pre 64 winchester model 70 (300 H&H magnum). i shot it yesterday for the first time in 40 years. the trigger is stock, but compared to my rifles is terribly stiff. is this trigger adjustable? if so, does anybody know of a website that i can go to, to get the info on how to and which screws are which? i have adjusted the trigger on my rem 700. that was easy. i hope that this can be done without to much fuss. thanx.

If you do adjust the trigger, make sure you bounce the butt(empty gun of course!!) on a hard floor a few times to make sure it won' fire accidently. I have seen the return spring adjusted so light the gun would fire by merely pushing the safety to "Fire".

Easy to do, but pay close attention to MMCSRET's advice.

I have an old (five digit) M/70 that I've owned since the early '60s that's been an unfailingly accurate and 'lucky' gun for me. Once the trigger mechanism is set you are good to go, just make sure you check it for the sake of your safety, in addition to the checks suggested also 'slam' the bolt home with a lot of force once you think you've got it set to your liking.
I had mine down to a very pleasant and light pull and managed to spook a really good Dall sheep when I chambered a round and had an AD. I'd set the mechanism as directed, but had only used it on a bench. Elected to carry it unchambered when I happened on the ram and......well........! Anyway, it has held its CORRECT adjustment for over forty years, so I guess it's still 'good to go'.

Those old M-70 triggers are the best ever invented for simplicity & ease of adjustment. They will work when full of mud or sand, and if they don't, you can wash them out in a puddle of water and then they will work again. Just like a military Mauser trigger, only way way better pull.

Unfortunately, they have been "lawyered" out of existence now, and are gone forever.

It would be a cold day in you know where before I would elect to replace one with a Timney or other enclosed trigger.
