Pre model ten smith and wesson pearl grips

I know its gitting old people always asking for info on there guns but i dont have the extra money to pay smith and wesson to tell me.I took this gun in partial trade for a small boat i was selling and i am going to resell it as soon as i figure out just what i have.So if any one can help from what i have read it is an early 20s m&p 38.So the gun is a 5 inch barrel blue finsh 38 it has pearl grips with smith and wesson medallions in them sereal number is 236xxx dont know why people dont put whole number but figure there is a reason.lol On left side of barrel it says 38 s&w special ctg nothing on right hand side.nothing on left side of frame but has smith and wesson logo on right hand side of frame also says trade marke around logo.Does not say made in america on frame.On top of barrel it has alot of pattens and says smith and wesson springfield mass.I have looked and read all over internet and can not find a round butt blued revolver like this with factory pearl grips.Thank to any one that can help will try to git pic

Condition? As, overall cosmetics, and, mechanical/Bore/Timing/Lock-up..?

Factory Pearl Grips which may or may not have come with the Revolver originally...without a 'Letter', you won't know...and, unless the Revolver is very high condition, it would not matter to anyone anyway, if they did or not, unless it letters to a famous person...and, usually, famous people just ordered them through the Hardware Store or Sporting Goods Store it ends up lettering to, for that matter.

Factory Pearl Stocks in good condition however, are usually worth almost as much as the Revolver is if it is in worn condition, meaning, $125.00 plus.


Lovely Guns, high quality...very well thought of...and, unless in very high condition, and or lettering to a famous person, and or Factory Target Versions, not thought of as being particularly valuable.

You have a 4th change hand ejector made in the 1920's?? Not sure on the date and I don't have my book handy. The revolver is about $250-300 +/-. The grips if indeed Pearl, without the medallion they bring around $75-100. If they are S&W grips maybe more. The S&W forum can give a better answer on the grips being a S&W item or aftermarket.

You have a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905-3rd Change manufactured between 1909 & 1915. IIRC it lacks any hammer block safety and the chamber under the hammer should be left empty. It predates heat treating of cylinders so it should only be shot with standard pressure lead ammunition.
Per the standard Catalog of S&W your gun is probably in very good condition for it's age and was worth around $285 in 2006. Pearl stocks with gold medallions may add $150 or more to the value.

The issue is finding a buyer willing to pay those prices.
