Do any of you have strong opinions about the "pre silver pigeon" 686's or their value relative to the newer versions?

686 Onyx are a very good gun, just not as fancy as a Silver Pigeon. They are a little more affordable, average on a 12 ga. Is about $1600, Silver Pigeon I's are closer to 2000.
I still want a 20 ga. Onyx after having shot one at a Beretta demo day many years ago.

I have an Onyx, great gun. I thought the Silver Pigeon was a step down, they were cheaper when I bought mine about 25 years ago.

I like my 686. Not adorned at all. The “Essential”,a Remington Express version.

I've seen some 686 pre SPs on the range but haven't shot one. I picked up a new '23 J686FM0 in October and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Is there a difference between Pre- and Post- 686 Silver Pigeons? I have a 2018 SP1 which is quite elegant.

I had an older Sporting 686 with 30" MC barrels. I bought a new SP1 in 2019 because I liked the new gun that much better. Nothing at all wrong with the old gun except the barrels were heavy and poorly balanced. The new ones are lighter and swing easier. Both actions worked fine.

I have a silver pigeon with 32” barrels and an onyx with 26” barrels. I will probably sell the silver pigeon. The onyx has taken pheasant,
ducks, dove, and thousands of clays. There are a lot of fancier guns, but I’m not sure any of them shoot any better. The onyx is the last shotgun I would ever sell.
