Hello Everyone,

I love iron sights and black rifles, and I have a problem.

Awhile back when everyone was buying black rifles as fast as they could I expanded my collection with the purchase of the standard DSA SA58 model with a 21" barrel, standard gas system, extended length scope mount, and picatinny rail blocks for mounting both the front and rear iron sights. My reasoning was that I viewed the standard FAL sights as a real step down from the AR-15 and M1A sights I am used to. It has never been fired. In talking with a DSA representative yesterday, I was directed to purchase a set of YHM folding front (YHM9584) and rear (YHM9860) sights that the company usually sets up their FAL rifles with.

In talking with YHM they strongly suggested NOT using this set up as it was designed for the AR-15 in 5.56mm NATO (.223 Remington) and the trajectory would not line up with the 7.62mm NATO (.308 Winchester).

So I called DSA back and asked for one of their experts. After going through two people I got the right guy. He explained that people who purchase the picatinny rail block set up for mounting their own sights are working to co-witness the iron sights with an EO-Tech. So they almost always set the customer up with the YHM iron sights described above. He said the set up works out to about 150 to 200 yards and then the trajectory of the 7.62mm round departs from the sighting range of the 5.56mm iron sights. For more precision he suggested mounting fixed A2 sights to the rear of the scope mount and the front picatinny gas block to avoid the imprecision created by the front and rear sights on the upper and lower receivers of the FAL as well as the folding aspect of most of the available sights.

The 7.62mm NATO is a caliber capable of battle accuracy out to at least 500 yards in skilled hands and I love iron sights. So the idea of a 150 yards FAL is a very unpleasant one.

I NEED the advice of the iron sight loving, black rifle toting long range shooters on this board.

Questions:

What high quality sight set up would you suggest for this rifle?

Can a set of detachable A2 sight be modified to work with the trajectory of the 7.62mm NATO caliber? Different height of post for the front sight?

Can the suggested sight set up work in concert with a low power scope?

Thank you for your assistance.

I have an Ar10 and I put a rail mounted (ar15) flip up front sight and a Matech flip up rear. I figure since the front sight is rail mounted instead of gas block rail I should have no problem. I have not shot the rifle with this combo but I don't think I will have a problem with it.

That might work if you can tell me of a set of M1A National Match sights that mount to picatinny gas blocks or rails.

Options:

1) Send rifle back to DSA for standard FAL sights to be installed. They work out to 600 yards and are not that bad.

2) Buy YHM sights and file down the front post a bit. This would add elevation for longer distances.

3) Forget sights and scope it.

4) Get an ACOG and you'll forget that iron sights ever existed. Durability/reliability in the same league, as someone else posted here "literally bombproof."

5) Sell it and get an M1A or AR-10 with nicer iron sights matched to the rifle's performance. (I say this as a huge fan of the FAL, but also of the M1A.)

In response to the suggestions:

1) Too labor intensive and I have the standard sights.

2) Possibly

3) A fighting rifle with only optical sights is not acceptable to me as I believe in a backups very strongly as Murphy is an optimist.

4) While I agree with the bombproof part, I am unimpressed with ACOG optics.

5) I already own examples of these two rifles, but am trying to optimize my FAL for my use.

A2 carry handles are cheap and plentiful now. You can buy one for $50 and cut off the handle portion and leave the sight tower and rear mounting clamp. This would give you a rear with both windage and elevation adjustment. As you sight in the rear at difference distances you can ingnore the preset markings on the elevation drum and mark it to your needs and zeros. The rear would not be a fold-down but would serve the rest of your needs.

OR just use the YHM "Solid Rear Sight"
