Predators in North America

But I also think a rancher should have a right to shoot a predator on his property.
Except, that out West, most land is federal land and a rancher is leasing the property, so does that right extend to property that belongs to everyone?

Sure, oneounceload, he's protecting his property: The livestock. When you're on a city street, don't you have the right to protect your wife? (At the risk of getting the ladies POed--although they're in no way "livestock". :D)

My parents live in Missoula, MT and they say the amount of elk they see from year to year has declined since the wolves have been reintroduced. My Dad said his favorite hunting area is overrun by wolf sign where there was once elk sign.

Also, another humorous thing they told me is that the actress Andie McDowell was one of the major bunny huggers who lived there begging to have the wolves brought back. Well, now they say she's moved out of the area because she's scared that the wolves are going to get her kids and dogs. Could just be a story they're repeating, but they wouldn't repeat it if they didn't think it were true.

The game wardens have been pushing for a wolf season there since they were reintroduced. Thank God the judges there have finally come to their senses.

I say kill 'em all!

In Idaho, cattle have the legal right-of-way on the highway, and Open Range signs abound.

Now if the rancher didn't pay the lease, that'd be different. But as a landlord, I have no immediate right to my property. My tenant does. It's "his" until he stops paying for it.

The news in Colorado is full of bear encounters and attacks in recent yrs. + some lions in the mix. Aspen has been over run. We can't properly manage the large predators we have let alone adding more.
As was posted before wolves and brown bears will behave like the coyotes, lions, and black bears and if the hunter is removed from the equation they will do so with no fear of man.
