I have a s&w 340 m&p and am debating whether to carry 158 gr or 125 gr loads. I am not recoil shy but wanted to hear from folks with many more years experience in the firearms world on their preference and why. Also as opposed to modern hollowpoints such as those in hornady's critical defense, how well do semi-jacketed hollowpoints fair?

A department head I work with has this same S&W and I loaded some rounds up for him. I used 125 grain Speer Uni-Cor hollowpoints with 2400, he said he wanted them hot so I made them hot. He didn't like them hot. They ran up into his hand so bad he couldn't finish shooting them. But the boards he was shooting at were completely trashed. HUGE gaping hole out of the back of 3 2x4's. Now he shoots a mid-load 158 Hornady XTP.

yes i've tried the hornady critical defense 125 gr .357 mag. I don't have a chronograph but in comparison to some of the other .357 ammo in 158 gr, it just doesn't feel like that same .357 oomph. I have heard of the 38 spl +p but i would like to find some good carry ammo. Also I do not have a reloading set up yet but plan too.

For snubbies I like the Speer 135gr +Pshort barrel load.
For longer barreled .38s, I like the BB 158gr LSWCHP+P.
For longer barreled .38s, I like the BB 158gr LSWCHP+P.

That one is tough to beat. Remington also makes a fine LSWCHP +p. They're soft lead, expand very well and have a long excellent track record.

For a short barrel revolver like that, I'd go with Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 135g in .357mag or 125gr +P in .38spl

i personally like 135gr gold dot 38 special+p's. They shoot great in my J-frame and the recoil is not bad.
