I was 19 and hated college so what do I do??? Drop out and join the Army baby!! Well this was 6 years ago, and after 2 tours in Iraq and 1 in Germany its all over....Now I am back in college working towards a degree in Criminal Justice/ Pre Law, I want to become a Police Officer...enough about that lets get down to buisness....I have gotten tired of packing a cap gun haha. I am looking for a new pistol, its a present for myself, I want a .45, possibly a Kimber or a Para, give me some suggestions people!

I suggest you quit being so self centered. Abandon your selfish ways and as an act of contrition, spend that money on an old Scooter Tramp. PM me for suitable candidates. Now, go forth and sin no more.

Biker (aka Ol' Scooter Tramp):)

Are you set on a 1911 style .45, or would something like the XD45 interest you? I have the XD40 and the reliability and accuaracy are amazing. You pay $500 for a gun that works better than some $1000 gun.

But I would understand if you want to stick with JMB's design.

Get a Colt

Get a Colt XSE or Series 70. Kimber is doing better, but it's still a crap-shoot as to will you get a good Kimber or a failing Kimber.

Para, heck, if the Canadians can't have pistols, why should we buy their pistols? Unless they have changed their laws re: pistols. All the same, keep your $$$ in the U.S.

Colt: it's the original 1911!

What's your budget? Everyone and their grandmother are making 1911s now, so you could have a $400 1911 or a $2500 one.

I like the Kimbers, Springfields, Dan Wesson, etc. Don't like the Para double stacks but that's just because they are too big for my hands. The Springfield XD45 is the only double stack 45 I like so far.

I've got

a Para 13-.45 and it works great. Bought it used for about $350. One caution, Para has a very high opinion of what their mags are worth ($40). That said, my Rugers in .44mag (DA and SA) get the most lead through them.

Para... love 'em or hate 'em

Seriously, it seems as though the Para Ord issue is always extremely polarized. Now for the positive end of the spectrum. I love my Para's. I own a 1st generation P-12 steel frame and it is so good that I use it exclusively to qualify for CCW.

I also dropped the heavy coin for a Warthog and it is my most favoritist gun in the whole wide world.

I had a P-12 with an alloy frame, but I fell in love with a Bersa Thunder 40 and I parted ways with that Para in a trade that I am pleased to say has been most acceptable.

I do fully intend to buy a P-14 or BigHawg after I purchase a couple of battle rifles.

As far as people saying to keep your money in the U.S., Springfield Armory has parts and guns made in several countries and I beg to ask these folks how many foreign made guns they own. Buy what works, what you like, what makes you feel safe and what pushes your buttons.

I don't have any expriance with Kimber but I do with Para. I bought a Hi-cap LTC last June for $740(the $40 was for shipping). The pistol shot fine but I had trouble with the magazines. For some reason I am still not sure of they would not drop free when the mag release was pushed. So I sent it back to Para and they sent me brand new pistol. Have had no similar problems with the new one and it shoots great. It is a little heavy though. They are not the cheapest 45acp out there but they are not the most expensive either. Maybe this will help you decide.

I am a diehard Colt fan; however, I am also fair and honest (as much as I can).
Springfield Mil-Spec or one of the new Rock Island Arms ($330 + tax, tag, and dealer prep) are hard to beat as far as price for what you get. If you want a pistol to try out to see if you really want to the 1911 design, then I would suggest going that route. After you are a 1911 nut, you can move into Colts and Kimbers and such.
I have a Springfield Armory GI 1911, but the sights made it worthless for these old eyes, so I completely re-did the pistol top to bottom and it is now un-recognizable as what it was. The Mil-Spec has good enough sights, and I if I did not already have a stable of 1911 ponies I would be temped to get one to play with. My FFL guy just got in a couple of RIA 1911s, which he got for $330 his price. Again, you are not getting top of the line, but the folks that have the RIA have been impressed with the pistol you get for the price.
Just something to consider.
