The mayor called the order unprecedentedd said anyone who could leave the city should. He exempted hotels from the evacuation order because airlines had already cancelled all flights.

Gov. Kathleen Blanco, standing beside the mayor at a news conference, said President Bush called and personally appealed for a mandatory evacuation for the low-lying city, which is prone to flooding.

President Bush had ordered FEMA into place on 8/27 two full days before the hurricane and 3 before the levee was breached.

FEMA had pre-positioned 500 trucks of ice, 500 trucks of water and 350 of MRE's prior to the hurricane.

The mayor should have used these buses to start the mandatory evac before they went under water.

That would make Bush look good, so it was ignored by the MSM. Then, remember that folks like the NO mayor and the LA governor have their own problems with short-term memory, which is why they're whining about the lack of federal help.

Yes Ron... I have been saying this off and on most of the week while others were beaching and moaning about our dumb president and his band of incompetent Federales

Let me get this right: The Democrats had no local or state plan so they blame the Federal Government. The people in trouble are the ones completely dependent on the government, just like the Dems like. But the Dems had no plan even though they controll the city and state governments.... and spent their time controlling people for their benefit rather than being public servants. They must be troubled that they won't have hosts for their parasitic ways and that the freeloaders that vote for them may be moving to other states!

I must say that I have been through numerous hurricanes in Florida, I can't remember how many. Last year at my Mom's house in FL was the last. We know to get many days worth of water and food packaged properly before the storm. We had a generator and vehicles were filled with gas. We got loose debris from the earlier hurricane cleared away and made sure there was nothing that could blow around. Most people in New Orleans would be in good shape personally if they had made the same preparations we made last year. But, we did not count on the Government for anything except a hassle (and the left wing do). It seems some will set fire to things to show dissatisfaction with the state of socialist care provided to them. I agree that the liberal government can't care for everyone in a crisis and that is why I choose to be personally responsible for ME and would never trust narsciscistic politicians for the most trivial of anything except for lining their pockets for false promises. They should be held accountable TOMORROW!

The "leadership" in New Orleans does nothing but flap their gums.

Am I alone in recalling that when the first reports came in that the levee had failed, the city's director of homeland security stated that they would have it repaired within a couple of hours. (And my reaction at the time was, "Oh, yeah?")

It's now three days later, or four? And as far as I know they still don't have it repaired. So what was that dude smoking before he opened his pie hole? With "leadership" that's incapable of making an even remotely accurate assessment of the problem, nobody stands a chance.

That story mentions the mandatory evacuation order and add the important tidbit that city officials warned evacuees to bring their own food and water to the superdome; but it doesn't mention the FEMA trucks you reference?

Do you have a source for those numbers? It would be really useful for an online debate I'm having.

How about that!
A thread on Nooawlins I can read through without having to spit in fury!

Don't ask a starving man for food. Don't ask a poor man for a job.

This is another reminder that those who are totally dependent shouldn't be allowed to breed until they get their act together. [Long term] assistance should be conditional, even involving suspension of some rights. Those who are determined "hopeless", perhaps via a 3 strike program, should accept sterilization in exchange for continuing support and the right to keep existing children.

A major factor that will make people cranky or worse when homeless and dependent is withdrawal from addictions, whether that be drugs, food, TV, alcohol, sex, cigarettes, coffee, Twinkies, whatever. It would be interesting to see people's wish lists once they have food, water, shelter, and security.

The amount of parenting (of adults) required by social services for many of these homeless people is going to be huge. Others, of course, simply need a little help and can then take care of themselves just fine, thank you.

The people of LA elected a moron as mayor of NO; they elected an airhead as U.S. Senator (Mary Landrieu) and another airhead as Governor. Naturally, they're not going to take responsibility for their own folly, as they're the people who elected those people to represent them. Kind of like folks choosing to live in California and NY complaining about gun control laws.

As a citizen of the state of Louisiana, it is my hope, that the resignations of the mayor of N.O., the governor of Louisiana, and Senator Mary Landrieu, are forthcoming, shortly after the worst of this disaster are over. The lack of leadership, and professionalism in their respective offices was, and is an embarrassment to the good people of this state.

Corrupt politicians will NEVER resign. They shift blame, and obscure the issue until you're looking the other way, then abscond to Jamaica with the treasury....

Are you saying that competence in crisis management will be and remain the primary criterion for election. Isn't that just a reaction to a specific incident, a feel good remedy. How does it really change anything? What if you now have someone deficient in some other area? My concern is that no one truly competent would even want the job. I have that fear about any position, all the way up to the Presidency. Americans are not very supportive of their leaders. They use their free speech more for being cranky than for for being objective and sympathetic about how tough some of these jobs really are.

I am/was comparing their handling of the current situation to how people like Rudy Guliani handled 9/11 in New York. Leadership is a trait I deem necessary in leaders. :D The way the mayor of New Orleans "lost it" on TV/radio was very unprofessional.
