Russia tried and failed to keep up with our weapons program. In doing so, it destroyed their country finiancially. The hint of our SDI development forced the USSR to divert its already unsteady economic situation into a funding of an arms race. It failed and Mr Gorbachav tore down that wall.

Gotta love him stating that "Government is the problem". May he RIP.

I'm not the kind of guy that gets choked up, but...

Reagan is the first president I remember. I was born in 1975, and one of my first memories is coming home from school and watching the coverage of Reagan getting shot, while eating a Baby Ruth candy bar.

Since then we have had a string of terrible presidents. Liars, prevaricators, and hypocrites all.

Everybody talks about how great the "good ol' days" were. For me the eighties are the good 'ol days, and President Reagan is a huge part of that.

Yep, whenever I think of the word President, it isn't Bill Clinton's face that I see. I was born in 1975 too, and I'll probably always think of Ronnie as The President.

President Reagan was exactly what we needed when he was elected in November of 1980. I remember that, after 4 years of Carter, we were in pathetic shape. Many military families were so poor that they lived in their cars next to the piers. Our military barely had enough working equipment to fulfill their missions.

Interest rates were high, and inflation was even higher. Then, upon all that, there was the Iran Hostage crisis. By then end of the Carter administration, America was a super power in name only.

Because of President Reagan's leadership, we became strong again. After 4 years of weak leadership under Carter, we were able to live up to our potential once again.

God Bless President Reagan, and may he rest in well-deserved peace.

Reagan's accomplishments have affected all of our lives, and will do so for many years to come.

My wish is that all of us will be fortunate enough to see his like again.

FWIW,

The Russians are mourning his passing, and Gorbachev called him a great leader.

"I take the death of Ronald Reagan very hard. He was a man with whom destiny brought me into contact during the most difficult years of the last century when we on both sides of the divide felt that a nuclear conflict was looming; and it felt as if the arms race was spiraling out of control -- that we couldn't control the military machine properly." -- Mikhail Gorbachev

The lead news story on Russian television news has been the death of Ronald reagan. They called him "One of the greatest politicians of the Twentieth Century."

Outstanding. It's a tribute in itself.

Another son of '75 here, and President Reagan is the first president I remember too. He won the cold war, and kept the press spinning in circles, instead of letting them lead him around with polls and popularity ratings. A good man, a great leader.

BTW, for all of the bad we say about Ahnold, when he got to the President's viewing he could have simply walked inside. Instead, he took his place at the end of the line and waited his turn like everyone else.

I have been watching the coverage on his life and what a truely amazing president he was. Not just was he the President, but a true statesman and a GOOD person.

He took the time to be pen pals with people instead of sending everyone stupid generic letters. Also, there was a story of him giving a speech at a soldier's funeral or memorial and a lil 4yo ish boy coming up to him asking him to bring his daddy back. Reagan picked him up and hugged him and starting crying and saying I wish...I am thankful Bush2 is trying to mold himself after Reagan.

Also, I think it is great Bush2 is continuing the tradition Clinton broke of being in a suit at all times in the oval office.

Gorbachev pays respect to Reagan

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has paid tribute to former US President Ronald Reagan, who died today aged 93.

"I feel deep regret," said the last Soviet leader, who met Mr Reagan on the sidelines of a meeting in Geneva in 1985 before the two held a historic summit in Reykjavik the following year as Mr Reagan launched a series of meetings that led to an easing of tensions, and eventually to the Soviet Union's collapse.

"For me, Ronald Reagan is a great president," Mr Gorbachev told Moscow Echo radio.

He said that Mr Reagan appeared at the right place at the right time because other leaders in his place might have only heightened the tensions between Moscow and Washington at a time of intense military stand-off, with the threat of nuclear war looming.

"I do not know how other officials would have acted in his place at that moment, because the situation was very tense," Mr Gorbachev said.

"Reagan, who was considered to be far-right, made steps toward us, and herein lies his credit."
