Someone brought to my attention an article on page 40 of the May 2004 issue of Prevention magazine. The article is publicizing an upcoming march and a book “Looking for a Few Good Moms: How One Mother Rallied a Million Others against the Gun Lobby.â€

If you subscribe to this magazine or buy it at the newsstand, you need to check out this article and decide if you really want to continue subscribing or purchasing.

Remember, it’s not enough to ignore the articles; you need to ensure you don’t empower this magazine and their agenda with your subscription money.

its not the magazine

its the publisher

Rodale Press publishes Prevention,
and they also just published Donna Dees-Thomase new book:

Very well written, Donna writes in such a way that you feel yourself taking part in this important piece in social history and at the same time explains the issue in such a way that if you haven't been involved before, you will now. And at the end this book give excellent tips for becoming a grass roots organizer.

you feel yourself taking part in this important piece in social history
I wonder if those stooges will live long enough to be able to look back on their "participation" and realize they were being duped.

I look at Prevention at the checkout counter, and occasionally buy it if a particular article looks interesting - but no more. Ditto for Men's Health or any other Rodale Press product. I won't support those trying to take away my rights.

A more effective way to fight these scumbags is to write to the advertisers - tell them that you won't buy their products as long as they advertise in anti-gun magazines, etc., and that you've got lots of like-minded friends who trust your judgment on these things (like, for instance, your 10,000 or so nearest and dearest friends on THR). The withdrawal of advertising revenue grabs their attention - there are relatively few advertisers compared to the number of subscribers, and the dollar value of one advertiser is thousands of times higher than any one subscriber.

Sam Adams

Good idea. Somf of their advertisers include Johnson & Johnson, Tropicana, Mercury, GNC, Quaker, Bausch & Lomb, Warner Lambert, Nabisco, Merck, Dannon, Pfizer, Kraft, Kelloggs, Campbell's, Purina, and Bayer.

most of the Rodale magazine have web sites with forums

i remember several "what should i carry?" discussions on Backpacker's

Anti-gun march 'looking for good moms'

April 12 2000 at 11:01AM

Short Hills, New Jersey - It took an unforgettable image of young children escaping a racist gunman to transform Donna Dees-Thomases from a wealthy suburban mother into a grassroots activist.

The image was from August 10, when a white supremacist opened fire on a Jewish Community Centre in Granada Hills, California.

Dees-Thomases was flipping channels when she saw the video of children the same age as her daughters crossing the street hand-in-hand with police officers.

"These were my kids crossing the street," Dees-Thomases said. "My kids go to a JCC. Anybody could walk in. It was just crazy."

One week later, Dees-Thomases registered a website, and launched the Million Mom March campaign. The grassroots effort is expected to become the nation's largest gun control demonstration to date.

The Mother's Day rally on May 14 is expected to draw 100 000 people to the National Mall in Washington, DC. Other demonstrations are scheduled in 20 cities nationwide, including Tulsa, Oklahoma, Los Angeles, Denver and Portland, Oregon.

The group is pressing congress for stricter gun control legislation, including measures to require all handgun owners to be licensed and registered, require built-in child safety locks and limit handgun purchases to one a month.

"Mothers are certainly an important voice in this debate, and they are a voice that has not been very strong until this point," said Shannon Frattaroli, researcher at the Center for Gun Policy and Research at Johns Hopkins University.

"We have yet to see really a grass roots movement in this area, and maybe that's what is needed in order to change voting behaviour."

National Rifle Association (NRA) spokesperson Bill Powers said the organisation was unconcerned about the appeal of the May 14 rally.

"It is one of the great freedoms of America to express oneself politically," he said. The NRA is a powerful lobbying group representing gun owners and opposes most gun control legislation.

Prior to the Granda Hills shooting, Dees-Thomases considered herself rather apolitical. Today, her cluttered basement office in this wealthy suburban community is adorned by bright pink posters and T-shirts reading, "We're looking for a few good moms."

Dees-Thomases, a part-time publicist for David Letterman's late-night talk show, chose the name Million Mom March to borrow on the success of the Million Man March rally for black empowerment in Washington in 1995, and the subsequent Million Youth March.

The campaign has grown - mostly by word of mouth - to at least 500 mothers working out of their homes and out of an office in Washington, DC.

Organisers have recruited marchers by calling parent-teacher groups, churches, synagogues and women's groups for support, Dees-Thomases said.

"It is a true instinct of mothers protecting their children," she said. "I think it is totally primitive."

The group also has received a $300 000 (about R1,98-million) grant from the Funders' Collective for Gun Violence Prevention, part of the nonprofit Open Society Institute established by billionaire George Soros. It also sells T-shirts for $25, the same price as an annual NRA membership.

"This is just common sense. These are handguns," she said. "This is just stuff that should have been done 25 years ago."

"... How One Mother Rallied a Million Others against the Gun Lobby.â€
Hmmm. Must be the "New Math." I've gotta figure out how I can inflate my bank account the way the MMM inflates its membership numbers.

"These were my kids crossing the street," Dees-Thomases said. "My kids go to a JCC. Anybody could walk in. It was just crazy."

And everyone inside is unarmed. No way to defend the kids against a murderous gunman. And her answer? Disarm everyone. Genius. Sheer Genius.

These people disgust me.

Mental note to self; Do not read or support in anyway Prevention.

Also; get cookie after work. And wash down w/ Iced White Mocha courtesy of Starbucks.

What is "Prevention Magazine" about anyways? Prevention of common sense?

This is really a crime. J. I. Rodale built a fine magazine and company, When he died (on a TV program) his son Robert took over and continued the Organic Gardening movement. When he was killed in an automobile accident that left Maria in charge. The publications have gotten slicker with less information and lots of lefty politics.

It is just like Teresa Heinz, The Hilton Sisters, Arthur Kroc's wife and innumerable others; those that create nothing inherit and use the money to help destroy that which they are incapable of creating. Jealousy, stupidity or whatever......they do an incredible amount of harm.

And you can vote on how helpful the reviews were to making your decision on if you were going to buy the book or not  .

Looking at if further you can recomend a book to read instead of hers. UC? EFAD? More Guns, Less Crime? Decisions decisions :D .

Scaramouche, let me welcome you to THR, you are so right!

Back when Rodale Press was true to its founder's beliefs it was a little bit to the left of center (nowadays Rodale would be considered a rightist extremist), but now it is about as far left as it can get.

Big business is the one place where I think confiscatory inheritance tax is a good thing. Don't forget the Joyce Foundation, the Kennedy Foundation, the McArthur Foundation and a hundred others like them.

Meek & Mild, Thank you for your welcome though I disagree with your condemnation of big business. The problem is that the foundations were created to protect those assets from being squandered by irresponsible and incompetent inheritors.

You are correct in aiming at the Foundations. The really big ones always seem to end up in the hands of the Socialists, don't they? How does this happen???

I am brand new to the board and don't wish to be pedantic, but your mention of the left's domination of the tax free foundations suggests that it might not be inappropriate to encourage the readers (members) who are of more recent generations to do a little research so as to understand EXACTLY what they are opposing.

The success of Socialism is due to the Original Fabian Society, and specifically to Sydney and Beatrice Webb.

This Little Band Of Prophets by Anne Freemantle will give you a good insight into their program. Beatrice Webb was brilliant in that she understood that Socialism did not appeal to the working man. Instead, they devoted their programs to corrupting the scions of wealth. I.e. those who inherited that which they couldn't create. They also understood that wealth did not claim the respect that power did, and that the road to power was in destruction of traditional principles and the creation of dependency. BTW Sydney and Beatrice Webb founded the London School of Economics from which Harvard was the 1st University to be infected via THE CAMBRIDGE CLUB @ 1910 courtesy of John Dewey.

The present day's bizarreness is more comprehensible if you are familiar with its genesis and development.

The corruption of our educational system is also due to the Socialist influence via the Tax Free Foundations. In the 30's, 40's & 50's through the present time, their influence of naming "Like thinking individuals" to be presidents of Universities (in exchange for donations from the foundations) they established a foothold. When a Department Head vacancy occurred, only a "Liberal" was deemed to be qualified. Once that depth of penetration was accomplished, there were only "token" conservatives to be found on campus. Complete dominance was accomplished in @ 30 years!

THEY control the flow of information to your children for 12 to 16 years, and if you don't closely monitor their teachings, they will have won the battle for their minds.

Remember both DeTocqueville's and Jefferson's comments and warnings on the difference between those who manipulate things and those who manipulate people.

though I disagree with your condemnation of big business
Written too hastily. If I modified it 'twould be to condemn the ability of big business to shelter its wealth via foundations and trusts. I would wonder if (in spirit but not in letter of the law) those same trusts are not just the next stage of evolution of the very same royalists our FF so specifically negated in the Constitution? If so, could their breakup be justified under 'original intent'?

Re the rest of your reply, I think you're going to do well here. :D

Well, in fairness, Paris is keeping some reality show employees in work, although I think it debatable whether that's a social good or not.
