I'm looking to buy a Ruger 10/22 as a cheap plinker. My college has a shooting range that was once meant for ROTC training purposes but is now open to students.

I'm interested in the stainless-steel models, and my local gun store has a stainless-steel w/ synthetic stock for $233 plus tax (Academys has it for about 4 bucks less). Is that too pricey for a 10/22 or does it sound about right?

Also, has anyone had any experience with the Tapco replacement stock + pistol grip for the 10/22? I believe it's called the Fusion.

sounds about right.
I paid about $200 for my stainless, synthetic stock 10/22 from Wally World about 6 years ago. Put a cheap scope on it. Fun gun.

I have not used the Tapco stock. I would recommend the Hogue Overmold stock for a great feel and shootability or the Butler Creek folder for fun.

Buy the one locally. Acedemy is the cheapest I have seen (I'm halfway looking for the same thing). The 4 dollars is worth keeoing your local dealer in business. He will be easier to buy from and deal with, too. Sounds like a great price from a local guy.

Buy locally, it's worth the extra 10-20 bucks.

I was at a gun show this weekend and helped my friend pick up a stainless/stnthetic NIB for 210.00 total, I thought it was a pretty good deal.

There doesn't appear to be any actual stainless steel on the "stainless" Ruger these days. The receiver is aluminum with silver/grey paint and the barrels are just painted as well.

I guess I didn't know that. I bough my little 10/22 about 10 to 13 years ago and it's the stainless model with the gray/green laminate stock. I've got a bunch of rounds through that little gun with a cheapo 4x Simmons scope. I can sure put a beating on the little swinging targets with it too. I'm happy that I bought it.

ive got hogue stocks on both of my 10/22s, but i have yet to hear anything negative about the Tapco ones. based on what everyone else has commented on them, i would feel same getting one for my next rifle.
