Just wanted a price check on the following gun I found at a local Pawn Shop:

S&W Model 66-1 (stainless, adjustable sights)
357 Mag
4" Barrel
Hogue finger groove rubber grips (don't work for me, they'd have to go)
Excellent condition
Asking price: $525

Now, $525 seems about right for a 2.5" model these days, but a 4"? I was thinking more along the lines of $450 as a fair and reasonable price.

I am considering purchasing this to be used as a CCW gun (IWB).

What say you?

I got an unfired model 66-2 (new in the box, sitting in a safe for 30 years) a few years ago for that price.

I wouldn't pay more than $400 for one that had been used, you can buy police/security tradeins (low round count, but carried a lot) for $300 - $350, they show up every few months in batches.

I have not seen trade-ins from wholesalers at that price on 66's for quite a few years. 64s and 10s, yes, even sub-$300 a touch on those guns, but 66s, no. I think those prices are long gone for good.

I think this is good for the current market, yes. I even saw a 3" 66 with the original box that sat all day at a busy gun show yesterday for $550 - that would not have happened nine months ago.

I think a 4" K frame carried IWB is as much fun as putting a rabid weasel in your trousers. It might sound like fun initially, or after a few stiff cocktails, but pretty soon you are going to regret it. I have tried it (the 4" K-frame in my pants, not the rabid weasel), and my considered advice is it is far better to put a round-butt 2.5" K frame outside your waist band than a 4" K frame inside it. There are A LOT of things in this big ole' world that are much better to keep outside your waist band than in it, and I believe a 4" K frame is one. Save your money up and get a 2.5" 19 or 66 for cc. I believe that is the near-perfect cc gun and there are a handful of executives at S&W, that come the revolution, we should line up along the wall along with the lawyers as punishment for discontinuing it.

I've seen a few S&W model 66-2's like Oro describes for as low as $279,
here in central Dixie'Land~!
PM me, please, some names and phone numbers if you have them! I am a buyer of 4" 66's and 19s at that price. And 66-2s, in my experience, are on average better guns than 66-1's, P&R and all. That is a great buy. Just eight or less years ago you could get them routinely for $225 to $250 as trade-ins or at guns shows. Now they are almost double.

Take cash, start at 400 and know your upper limit. Now I just bought two and spent that much you listed. How much time you have, condition and how bad do you want it?

Right now, I carry a 2" square butt Model 15 without any issues, as well as a 5" M1911 with no problems. Actually a 6" Model 14 square butt is doable for me, but the barrel is a tad long and is just noticeable while sitting. A 4" 686 Plus is fine length wise, but is a bit too beefy in the cylinder area for my likes. I am 6'7" and 205 lbs, which may help with the longer barrels.

Thanks all for the info!

I may try for $400 cash, but I'm not hard over on this 66, so I can definitely walk away from it. I'd rather have a 19 as I prefer blued guns, but the 66 is sweet too.

Maybe that price for a "no dash" model. But I think you can find better deals.

I got my 66-2 4" with S&W wood target grips back in 2005 for $325. Looked brand new and still does. Prices have gone way up, though.
