The gun in the auction has minor blackning on the cylinder exits, does this indicate factory firing ? I am willing to go 650.00 but want to be sure its truely new. I passed on a new 19-5 Smith and Wesson 4 inch chrome local because it had rubber grips. I want to be the first to fire the gun if I choose to do so. I dont want someone elses problems or modifications.

Nope the on one GB has been shot and cleaned very well, It has a slight turn ring and the recoil shield show some wear from being opened and closed a bunch of times.

Has anyone delt with this seller, it seems to be a nice gun. Its just what I want but I do not want it if its been cleaned up to look new. Just my luck to get took. I have to pay my FFL dealer 40.00 dollars on top also. That is the reason I do not like auctions. :barf:

I've always wanted a S&W 66-0 in mint condition, 4-inch barrel. I have a 686 6-incher with a stamped sideplate and flash-chromed hammer/trigger, never fired and no discoloration on the face. Also a 629 first generation w/stamped sideplate. It, too, is new.

I loved the bluing and the stamped sideplates and always thought they gave the guns a distinct look. Now the bluing on most revolvers is junk.

I like chrome guns, but in Rugers I like blue guns. I like Rugers the best, but always wanted a model 19 ever since I was in college.

Can someone give me their opinion on this guns condition. I have been told by high road member the gun is unfired. I do respect the moderator Brians opinion as well. I would like to be double sure before I spend my hard earned money. Does Smith and Wesson test fire revolvers 10 rounds ? http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=139467720

IMHO ... if it -has- been fired past the test firing at the factory, it hasn't been fired much. Mr. Monk couldn't get it that clean if it had been.

If, when you add in all of the costs, (gun, shipping, transfer from FFL) it costs too much .. then don't buy it. Plenty more guns out there where that came from.

I was told the model 19 in the auction is a used gun by my FFL. He said smith test fire guns only 3 rounds and he mentioned the gun has been shot atleast six times and cleaned up. The seller states the gun is New and he has his own webpage. Who Do I believe,, and how much does this affect the value ? Does my FFL just want me to purchase a gun from him instead on the internet ? Could the gun really be new and am I just getting bad info from him ? Who do you trust ?

T.Y.
Pete

Another opinion - I believe the gun has been fired and is therefore not new. It is however near new, and shows only slight sign of usage.

If you are wanting a new in the box gun to set away for investment or whatever one does with a gun they never shoot , then I would pass on this one. If your plan is to shoot it, then the gun having fired perhaps, at most, a few cylinders full of ammo, would make no difference

The seller is Lee Jarrett. He's a very well known & respected collector/dealer of Smith & Wesson firearms as well as the owner of the Smith & Wesson forum. He's also a long time member of the S&W Collectors Association and the S&W Historical Foundation. If he says that the gun is NIB, it is. As far as the wear on the recoil shield, opening the revolver a couple of times will leave a mark. It doesn't take opening it a "bunch of times" for the mark to appear. I've ordered brand new guns that came in with that mark. Smith & Wesson used to fire only 3 shots in test firing, but that is not cast in concrete. I've also received new guns with 5 or 6 test shots having been fired. As for an FFL saying that the gun is used, etc., without physically examining it is a bit of a stretch.

You are not going to like my opinion but I will toss it out there anyway. If you want it go to 700 wo thinking twice. A gun like that is a vanishing resource.

You can not pay too much, just buy too early.

That 19 has been fired at least six times, it's been handled some. It's not NIB, it is 100%. NIB is just that, factory original gun in absolutely mint, unturned condition and accompanied by a mint box that is serial numbered to the gun, including all papers, manuals and hang tags. Take a good look at the photo of the crane, I think it's had a few dozen rounds down the pipe. Worth $650, you bet and probably more.

I am not a expert on wheel guns by any means but I can tell this gun shows signs of use. In the ad the seller states new old stock as well as unfired since the factory. Most of the guns I have come across in my travels that are NIB and factory fired only are very clean and hard to see any powder. You have to look very close.

The seller being a member of all these associations and the owner of a forum should know this better than anyone. I cry foul on his part. I understand if he was trying to hide something he would not have shown the pictures but I think this gets by the buyer that does not know the difference.

High ranking does not always mean you are right. Do you always believe in the powers that be? I think not and hope not. :scrutiny:

As the guns worth? The book puts it around 500.00 to 600.00 in this condition. So if you are looking for a NIB gun hold out and look to pay 750.00 to 850.00 for one. And pass on this one as it is not NIB.

I bought a NICKLE model 19-?(4 or 5, can't remember) last year in the box for $300. It's not NIB but is in real nice condition. I'm not a big fan of nickle but $300 was just too cheap.

That same seller had what he reported to be a 3" 66-1 on that auction board about a month or so ago.

If he was indeed as knowledgeable on S&W revolvers as asserted here, he should have at least suspected it to be a re-barrel as it is common knowledge that the 3" 66 was first made in the -2 variant, never in the P&R format.

In fairness, he later ammended his add to state that he "Suspected it could be a non original barrel".

Caveat Emptor.

That's pretty much the long and short of it.

While the revolver is not a "steal" at it's current price it's still fair. If you're looking for a shooter you could do a lot better. If I bought that one I wouldn't shoot it very much at all and in that sense, I'd feel like I wasted my money.

Relax. If you are this concerned about being "took", I would suggest you buy in person at gunshows or local dealers. The gun has been shot but not much. It in fact may have been only dry fired at the first dealer location prior to its original sale which could cause the turn line. It's a nice gun. Everyone with any salesmanship, cleans up a gun for sale as best they can.

Are you buying to collect or shoot? If it is to shoot, you are way too concerned about whether someone shot a box of shells through it because you will be doing exactly that in short order.

If you want a safe queen, it appears to be a 98-99% gun. But it has the box and other goodies with it. Generally guns with the goodies have not been shot much. It is worth $650 in my opinion.

I want a new gun not a used gun to look new. To many people say the gun is used and cleaned up to look as a new gun. I think I will just pass on this one. I would rather be safe than sorry.
