No "need" for a new gun, but always on the lookout.

I've found an XDS for under $500 out the door, brand new with 2 mags, from a local dealer. Apparently it was just priced around $650 or so.

Opinions of the XDS?

Good buy at this price?

Awesome pistol, great price. I bought mine last year for $499+ tax, now they are $569 around metro Atlanta if you can find one. Best Price I've seen is $529 + tax last week.

Seems to feed everything so far with no jams or issues. I chronoed some Speer 200gr Gold Dot +P at 979 fps!

I like mine, pocket carry it every day. Paid about $35 more than that price.

It can be pocket carried in the right pants (I can't pull it off in jeans but dress pants, cargo shorts and the like all work). It shoots better than I can shoot and it's got a decent trigger. The fiber optic sights are good for my crappy eyes. Recoil is... well, a 21 ounce .45 you can't get your pinky on is never going to be the most agreeable pistol but I've gone through 125 rounds without pain or fatigue. It's stout but can be managed.

Reliability seems to be the only area some people have had issues. Mine has gone through 300 rounds without a single failure. However, some people report slides failing to go into battery, etc. This is generally blamed by Springfield and apologists as insufficient lubrication and limp-wristing. I don't run a lot of lube but I do hold on tight, never a problem for me.

When I first got the pistol, I ran into a problem when loading a new magazine with the slide down. If I didn't pull that sucker back hard and aaaaaaaalllllllllll the way back, it would stovepipe the round. The slide seemed to stop just short of the required distance, then take significantly more force to come all the way back. Since my first range session, I never had that issue. It either loosened up or I just made sure to rack it good and hard - not sure which. Didn't bother me, because it wasn't an issue reloading from slidelock.

I suggest you check out Talon Grips if you buy it. I just got a pair, haven't shot them yet but I love the secure grip they give me. (I got the rubberized texture, didn't want the sandpaper-esque grip ruining my pockets)

That sounds like a great price.
I considered a Springfield XDs not long ago, but ended up going with the Glock 36.

I'd buy it...and then spend the next 6 hours trying to calm my wife down and explain to her the real value of that gun.

go get it!

I paid about $70 more, plus tax, for the all black in MN. It's a good price on a great gun. If it feels like it doesn't fit, switch the backstrap to the small one. I didn't think it would work for me because I've got pretty large paws, but it helped tighten groups and made it more comfortable to shoot. Also, add the Pearce magazine "tails". Gives a lot more control and reduces muzzle flip. Watch your grip so you don't drag a thumb on the slide, it's the most common cause of these guns not fully cycling. Don't be afraid to rack the slide or slingshot a round, run the gun hard, like it owes you money, and it will respond well.

As others have said, that's a good price. Snap it up quick, it won't be there long. I had my eye on the XDS for a while and stopped in my LGS on a whim just to put my hand on a display gun. Didn't think for a minute that they would actually have any in stock. After handling the gun for a few minutes I overhear one of the sales people ask another person behind the counter if they have any XDS left and he says they have seven left. Turns out they had gotten 20 in the day before. I look to my left and there is a guy filling out paperwork on one as I am standing there. No joke, while I am there, the guy that was helping me took a call from someone checking if they had the gun and said he was on his way there from an hour away. As I am leaving the counter, another person walks up and asks if they have the XDS. Well, I didn't go into the store with the intent to purchase that day, but I walked out with a lighter wallet. I have only had it at the range once, but I love it so far. Zero problems so far and it is more accurate than I am. I actually shot tighter groups with it than I did with my XD 45 with "4 barrel at 25 yards. Most likely the difference had more to do with me than the guns. But, I did notice the triggers are noticeably different between the two.

Grab it before it's too late. At that price it won't last long. Multiholster makes a good kydex holster for it with or without the Crimson Trace Laserguard. ( which is awesome, by the way.)
Be prepared to spend some time getting used to the trigger. Low and Left is where it seems to want to shoot for a lot of folks before they figure the trigger out.
