hey all,

had an offer made to me to buy a tikka t3 lite in 7mm from a friend. i'm terribly unfamiliar with the brand and even caliber. opinions? moa? customizable?

for the price check, comes with a nikon mildot scope, bipod, sling, rifle butt shoulder pad and 2 boxes of ammo. $500?

thanks for the advice

......side note......
i've been looking for a good medium to long range elk hunting rifle. tikka fit the bill? i have a love for iron sites, so was kinda put out that this doesn't have them, but has anyone ever had any problems out in the field as far as scopes go? i'm always paranoid something will go wrong, i'll break the scope, and miss a shot in the seven day hunting trip for lack of backup sites. rational or not?

I have a Tikka T3 in a 300wsm, it is one of the best rifle's I have ever shot. It is made by Sako, here in Oklahoma they run just under $500 out the door retail. 7 mag is a great round, but from what I have been told you would rather want to go with a 300 win mag or 300 wsm for Elk. I have never hunted Elk this is just what I have read and been told. The 7 mag will sure work on Elk if that's what you want to hunt with. Either way I would say is a good deal, not a great one.

I have a friend that uses 7mm for elk and has no issues with it, but refuses to for deer. He muttered something about not having a need for field dressing it afterwards.

If your buddy is ripping up deer that badly using a 7mm Mag, perhaps he needs to reconsider his bullet choice rather than dismiss the caliber outright. I've shot a 7mm mag for the last decade, and have never had meat damage iossues on the deer I've shot. I typically use 160 gr Nosler Partitions or Accubonds, or 162 gr Horandy Interlocks(factory loaded in all cases). Deer have all fallen to a single shot, without destroying any more meat than I've seen lesser calibers inflict. I swear by the 7mm as an all-around mule deer cartridge.

You can get a new one for around $500-

Scope, depends on wich model nikon it is and the year it was made, some of the Nikons... model/year were complete junk-

Bipod on a T-3... thats a concept...how far you shootin'?

I have had scopes go bad... 1 in 36 years of using them. If your that worried about the scope going bad...
1) Buy a good quality scope to begin with- Burris, Leupold, Sightron, ect...
2) Use quick detachable mounts, such as the Leupold QRW's... leave a second scope at the camp, already sighted in with rings attached. It does not have to be an expensive unit for a back up scope. If you experience failure, change out your scope, the zero will be close enough to bag elk with.

The 7 mag. is a fine cartirdge, you should be happy with it. I'll not debate calibers and or cartridges now... way too many opinions. All you need to know is, if you do get a 7mm Remimgton Magnum, it will serve you well.

If it were I, and I was going on a 7 day hunt, I might take a spare rifle with me, already set up, ready to go... that is if you have a spare to take, if not... the spare scope thing works.

Not much you can do to a Tikka as far as customizing, you really don't need to. The trigger is fine, well...

Accuracy of the T-3 will be better than most people can use- I don't think you'll be able to use the inaccuracy of the rifle as an excuse for a miss. hehehe :scrutiny:

As far as iron sights... well, I'm not much on em' for a deer/elk/large game gun, just my opinion. With the reliability of todays optics I do not think your going to have an issue were you'll need the iron sights.

Good huntin'- :D

scope is a nikon 4.5-14x40 buckmaster if that helps, dont know what year. good scope? like i said, i shoot a lot of iron sights. i'll get back to you with how many rounds have been through it.

seems from what you guys are saying it may be just a tad overpriced? between current gun funds and wife, i can't except anything but a great deal.

great advice on the scope issues uncle mike thanks. i hunt just about everything but sometimes it's less about meat and more about trophy, so if a seven mag will take an elk i'm sure i'm good to go. as far as target shooting goes i'd like something i can depend on out to the 400 yard mark. i'm not an outstanding shooter, so i'm confident from what you've said the gun will out shoot me.

I have two Tikka T3 Hunters (wood stock, blued barrel) that are both outstanding. One is in 7mag and the other is 308 win. My 7mag is my go to gun for deer and hogs. I use Federal Classic 150 grain soft points and it usually drops them where they stand if I make a body shot and always if I make a neck shot. My Tikka's are both easily moa.

The 7 mag. will definitely turn off an elk!
As for a target round.... no!

The 7 mag. is somewhat harder on barrels than the comparable target round.
To point.. if that T-3 has had a great number of rounds though it, then I should consider purchasing a new one.

As for that nikon, without the year of manufacture, you wont be able to tell, laymen, if it's one of the turds.

If it's a T3 Hunter, $ 500.00 is a good price. If it's a T3 Lite, $ 500.00 is a tad high. This is based on it being used. I own a T3 Hunter and it's a terrific rifle. Accurate and dependable. 7mm mag will handle elk all day long if you use the proper ammo.

updated info: all pieces assembled in 2005, about 10 rounds down the barrel, never out on a hunting trip.
