I have not bought factory ammunition in a long time so how much of a price difference is there between 9MM and 40 S&W? I would think if purcsased by the case there would not be a large difference.

I don't know about the case but it's usually $2-4.00 diff. per box around here depending on where you buy it and what's on sale.

I think the 40 S&W runs about 20% higher.

For example, at Widener's, Wolf (non brass) runs $11.00 for 9mm and $13.25 for 40 S&W (box of 50). Blazer (non brass) is about the same at $11.00 and $13.60.

I have found about the same at the local Walmart.

The town I live in is relatively small so I don't have much to compare too but 9mm is as cheap as $9.99 and the cheapest .40 s&w around here is $16 and .45 acp about $20. Only a couple options around here two these are all either Remington or blazer brass prices.

The cheapest 9mm I can find is Brown Bear at $179/case. The cheapest 40S&W I can find is CCI Blazer at $300/case. If you're looking for something like Federal American Eagle, then 9mm is close to $260-270 and 40S&W is closer to $330.
