Been lookin for a good snubnose in 38 or possibly 357 for awhile. I like the S&W's alot, 36, 640, 642. Well to make along story short i found a pre lock 640 in vg condition for about $420 otd in a local shop. Seemed kind of pricey at first, but when i came home and compared prices online it seems that everyone is very proud of all the prelock variants. I can get a brand new 642 for the same price if not a bit cheaper. But i kind of like the no lock, and i dont mind the extra heft. Any thoughts on this, is it a decent price or think i should pass?

Sounds about right. IIRC, 640s came in 357, although I believe I've seen one or two in 38 only.

If the one you are looking at is 357, that revolver has enough heft to control a 357. The Airlight 340/360 is a brutal little piece with 357s, and the 642 is 38 only.

Pre-lock 642s are available as well, but I don't see too many of them.

thanks, forgot to add that this would be my first revolver, and would be a backup/carry gun. Not really sold on .38 or .357 seems like either round would be plenty to stop a bad guy. Any suggestions would be welcome, but wow those older smiths sure are sexy.
