I used A 270 case in my 280,I sized it in my 280 die.loaded like i would and did for the rest of my 280s.like I had done before.
52 gr of IMR 4350,oal. Hornady 139 btsp to 3.290,,
when I pushed the case into the chamber, and pulled the triger, nothing happened,I thought oh no.NO POWDER,,I just set up now its home.but i went to pull the case out,the claw extrator didnt grab the case.I pushed the bolt a little harder, still.it didnt grab the case,so i pulled the trigger,I wished I would have went home.the gun went bang, gases came back into my eyes,I had my glasses on, but burnt powder still got in my eyes.the rim on the case came out, with the case, but i could see something went wrong.was it just the case of one bad case, that got past all my inspections,or was it something else.
All the cases were cleaned and trimed to size before being primed.

The 280 has a different headspace value than the 270, 30-06, 25-06. The case did not seat the shoulder in the chamber, thats what caused the abnormal condition. Pull up a diagram of case dimensions and you will see that the 280 has a longer length from rim to shoulder.

Primer Piercing

Generally means Too Excessive a load for primer type or too much powder charge or WRONG caliber cartridge in rifle or one drilled out the primer hole excessively. All modern rifles contain a "safety valve" regarding these "WHOOPS." Yea, it should scare one silly, since it means something ain't right! Don't proceed with a second try! cliffy

i loaded 30-06 for my 280 before.
I thought i had fireformed them along with the 270 too.but maybe this wasnt a great Idea after all,
I dont have any 270 or 30 cal bullets,so it not like i had the wrong bullet diameter,or size,I dont want to kill my win.classic.I guess doing the fire forming isnt a good idea after all..
I dont need any more burnt eyes, that hurt like you know..I was lucky i would think.

MMCSRET nailed it.

.280 has the shoulder farther forward, so the cartridge can't be chambered in a .270 Win. Since the .270 brass already had the shoulder pushed back, sizing in a .280 die didn't touch the shoulder. Instant headspace problem.

Glad you're OK.

Kudos to MMCSRET. With so many opinions and BS posted on internet boards this was good to see. Using .270 Win brass reloading .280 is downright dangerous due to the headspace implications.

ok i guess i'll sell all my 270 and 30-06 brass,,shame i trimed them and sized them, thanks for the help.
WHAT WAS I THINKING,I KNOW THE SHOULDERS ARENT THE SAME.i THOUGHT I COULD SHOOT THEM AND THEY WOULD FIREFORM,WRONG OON THAT ONE FOR SURE..
Thanks All..

The only way you could fireform them is to create a false shoulder. That's an advanced case-forming technique that you would want to be very sure you're comfortable with, and have the proper tools/setup.

You would have to neck UP, then down. It would likely be better to get some .280 Brass.

An example of creating a false shoulder in another cartridge: http://www.6mmbr.com/6improvedform.html (Method 2 in the link)

Hi Reloadbench!

Love your site and respect your views and insight into safe reloading. I consider every view golden. I also experiment to extremes and generally back down after experiencing SUPER-MAXIMUM "performance." Using the WRONG cartridge in the RIGHT rifle IS ALL-WRONG. On this point, I fully AGREE. I also will add: NEVER carry two calibers of cartridges when using ONE caliber of rifle. Mixing calibers is all too common; such as slipping a 20 gauge shell into a 12 gauge shotgun. Bad things happen, but with a little preventative medicine . . . Bad things happen less often. cliffy
