This is just out of curiosity....not big point here except for me to learn something. I do not reload but a nephew does so I get reloaded ammo from him sometimes on trades and such. So, yesterday I was at a gun show in Iowa and nephew had said to look for pistol primers, small and large. I found some small for $70 a 1000 and called nephew and he said no, not to buy for him. Then I found some Winchester small pistol primers for $60 a thousand and decided to buy one lot (The guy had like 6000) of 1000 and put them away for future...so of as a hedge against running out of ammo. My question......since primers are in such short supply what would most of you out there spend on a 1000 small pistol primers today?

They were going for around $20 per 1K not long ago. It creeped up to just under $30 per K when metal prices skyrocketed, and then went beserk after the election, the mega buying that went with it, and the supply dried way up.

$30 max for me, but I have plenty, so I can't advise those who are out.

Only the individual can answer what they will pay. Things will settle down, but it looks like it will be at least another month or two. Tough times to get started reloading.

I just bought 1000 large pistol primers for $29.50 (Winchester). The prices will come down as soon as supply catches up. The gun store where I bought the primers said that their suppliers said that supply will catch up this summer.

But, if I were desperate enough, as in, I had an upcoming weapons class and absolutely had to have ammo right now, I'd pay the $70/1000.

My shooting is recreational, though, so I'm not going to pay the truly exhorbitant prices. I'll just wait.

Newbie Reloader

Hello,
I only started reloading a few months ago but in my area I haven't seen any primers for less than $40/1000. I bought a box of CCI large rifle and another CCI Small Rifle both at a gun show here when I bought the press ( all 3 purchases from seperate people) then the wife went into our local gun shop and bought me 3k of the small pistol (last they had) I even went out of town 100 miles when I looked up CCI dealers to get more Small rifle and they were all 40/1000. THe shops here have gone to selling them by the 100 lately and the prices are between $5-$8 per 100, those I have passed on.

Right now the crazy demand has caused severe shortages and astronomical prices. I will use up what I have on hand and buy no more until the situation corrects itself.

If people stopped buying, the prices would come down. Econ 101.

I just bought 3000 small pistol primers and 2000 large pistol primers a few weeks ago for $32 per 1000. Unless your really hurting for primers I would try to wait it out for a while.

I am sure that I paid too much

and should have waited. I will be the first to admit it. However, when people flippantly refer to "Econ 101" or whatever, as if they have never made a mistake let me cite the fact that no one has a crystal ball and there are loads of people out there who thought, for example, buying IBM stock at $25 a share was too much and then it went to $100 and split...or people who thought paying $20 a box for .45 Long Colt ammo was too much and then it went up to the $29-34 range. What the bottom line is....we do not know what will happen.

The price I would buy at just a few short years ago was $70 per sleeve (5000 primers) or $14 per thousand for Winchester large pistol. Fortunately, I stocked up on several sleeves at that time and haven't had to pay today's ridiculous prices.

Oh, and that doesn't count the 5000 CCI LP that I bought at a IPSC match for $40. I still have some of those.

I bought 2000 small pistol primers last week for $25.99 per. The shop only gets a few boxes at a time though so had to wait a couple weeks and got lucky.

Several months ago I bought 2 bricks of Win Small Rifle and 3 bricks of Win Lrg Rifle primers and paid 21.95/1000 plus tax OTD. I guess my dealer doesn't believe in ripping off customers. :)

I held my nose and paid $40/k a few months back while I was waiting on an order and was completely out. That is the most I have paid, and I can't see paying more. I got enough to last me the rest of the year now, hopefully it will get back to sanity by then. If and when it does, I'll stock up so this doesn't happen to me again.

makes me dang near tear up, or is it get pissed off? :scrutiny:

The cost of primers practically used to be a non factor in reloading. No longer. :(

I first balked but then paid my long time local dealer $38.50 for a brick of sm. pistol a couple months back, about twice the normal price. I was totally out and badly wanted to load enough .38 Special to spend some time training my wife so I paid a price I would not normally have done.

BUT, that dealer needs to get a lot of milage out of the extra profit he pocketed on that purchase because it will be a cold day in He77 before he gets any more of my money. The component shortage WILL end and I do have other alternatives for my reloading supplies.

Win SP ..... just bought 1k this past week for $29 and tax. Saw some today priced @ $37

The last I bought, a couple weeks ago, were $32.00/1000. Friend of mine did pay $50.00/1000 a while back but the guy was ripping folks off and everyone knew it. I've been in that shop 1 time and won't go back either.

even tho my shooting is recreational,i"m getting desperate enough to pay fourty bucks.:(
in a month I'll pay fifty....maybe...
after that I'll take up fishing.

I hope all these morons who are asking 70.00 per thousand Primers and a dollar a round for 380 ammo are pissed when the supply finally catches up... I will sit back and laugh my ass off when they are trying to unload 4000 rounds of 380 at even what they paid for it.

Same with primers....

Ordered 10k from Cabella's April 3rd and still waiting. $30/K but when you add Hazmat and delivery it works out to around $34 per thousand.

Although I didn't immediatly need it now I was in a local gun store saturday and they had small pistol primers at $40/thousand and I bought a thousand to hold me over while I wait for the original order.

Despite feeling like I am being taken advantage of....

Its still cheeper to make my own ammo rathar than buying it---

As long as I have components, I'll always have ammo--

6 or 7 dollars more doesn't add much more when you average it out over a 1000 rounds...and it beats not being able to shoot.

However, I am making mental notes...and when things settle down I will send my business to those who did not take advantage of me whe times were tough

Something we all need to do.

I just bought a thousand of each small rifle and small pistol primers for $36 - that's £23 a pop over here. That's pretty much the same as it was last year in the UK. $70 per thousand is way over the top and I'd still balk at $60.

Thank you all for the information.

It helps especially when people put the area in which they live so we all can compare.

I swallowed hard and bought 2 (100) count primer box's at the last gun show for $7/per. It was either that, or I was out of business with my .308 for the summer, I chose to keep shooting.:) I don't plan on paying that price again though, hopefully in the fall, the market will return to normal, then I'm buying a case of large rifle, never be in this situation again.:mad. Even with primer's at that price, my reloads are far cheaper than any factory fodder.
