I'll start this off by saying that I am new to handloading, and I can't find what I'm looking for in a Google search.
I purchased a reloading lot from a man who just recently gave it up. This man reloaded 38sp and 44mag, so this lot came with 3/4 of a case of Federal Large Magnum Pistol Primers. I purposely didn't use these primers on my first work up loads, because they were not called for. So I purchased some WLPP to use. According to the box, they can also be used for Magnum loads.
So my question is, what are to the differences? If the WLPP are hotter than standard LPP, are they comparable heat and/or combustion wise to Magnum Primers?
I'm not asking if I can use them, I know that I can if rework up the charge or find the powder who's load data calls for them. I just really want to know the difference.
I'm also sure this has been covered somewhere in the umpteenth pages of this forum, but a basic search did not give the answers I was looking for.

The number you are looking for is the brisance of each of the types of primer.

Unfortunately, that data is not easy to come by. This is an annoying bit of "black box" in our hobby.

A reputable shooter/reloader on the 10mm forum says this:
The Winchester Large Pistol primers are very near the same strength as the CCI 350 Magnum, I have substituted them directly in many loadings. Unless you are loading to the very edge of maximum (anything over the manual published loads) you should be fine.

Brisance.. apparently it's vocabulary day. I had to look it up. What unit of measure is used, I wonder? Interesting that its not a measured and published value. Seems that it might be more common component of measuring PSI.
Thanks for learning me something today ATLDave. Thanks for the link sparkyv!

When I got into loading pistol cartridges using H110 and Titegroup I became especially aware of what kind of primer I was using. Beyond magnum vs standard, each brand has its own level of “hotness”. As mentioned some standard primers are just about equal to other brand’s magnum primers

I have never seen a chart for written information on the brisance of all the different primers. If you find it on the NET please pass it on to us!

Here is something else to ponder. Many reloaders will tell you when substituting a magnum primer for a standard primer you need to lessen the powder charge not to go over pressure yet there is no warning telling you to do so when using a WInchester LPP. Go figure!

look for "lead styphnate" detonation velocity. the difference in primer types is primarily the amount of primer compound. there are differences in the size and thickness of the cup, but this doesn't have an affect on the brisance.

luck,
