Primer Seating Problem

I have alot of different brands of .223 brass I am wanting to reload. I full lenght sized it and got ready to prime and the primers will not seat properly. Out of 40 I had maybe 10 go in with little pressure applied as they should. Then I had some that would not even began to seat with my Lee Auto Prime. By the way these are Remington Small Benchrest Primers. Any ideas?

I've done some research and see where I need a Swage Die. Does anyone know any methods or tricks that I could try to keep from spending another $30.00. The reviews I read on the die say the rod bends after +-80 rounds.

I know RCBS offers the swaging kit, and can be occasionally found cheaply. (I got mine for $10 at a gun show...)

RCBS will often replace the rod free/cheap if it does bend from what I've heard, but I've seen reports of them working well, too.

I don't have any experience with them though, as I haven't had to de-prime and swage any of my military brass yet.

I am doing 30-06 and 45 ACP brass. I give the military a good reaming of the lip on the pocket with a Lee chamfer tool. Swaging is better but this works for me.

Never done it, but I have read here on THR that the deburring tool will work, but I don't know if that is for LR or SR.

Yeah, you CAN use a de burring tool but it's a lot less precise and a LOT more labor intensive than the swaging tool. I know for a fact as I spent a lot of time in my youth processing .30 carbine cases!!!

Bite the 'bullet' and buy the RCBS tool............you will not regret it. And by the way, that rod won't bend if you adjust and use it according to directions.

The rod supports the case from the inside while the swage in the ram removes the crimp.

It must be adjusted to the particular cases you are using.

Mixed cases will often result in bending the rod because of the differances in case head thickness.

Sort you brass by headstamp, adjust the rod for them, and you will not bend it.

Also, using case lube on the pockets makes for much less swaging effort being needed.

Thanks for all the info guys! I "bit the bullet" and bought the RCBS Swager Kit from Midway. Its true when they say you don't save any money reloading. Every time I turn around I find something else I need to buy. Oh but isn't it fun!!

Reloading for me is a true hobby. I think I get more out of reloading than the shootting. But maybe i'm just a bad shot!

I ran across something different that I'd never seen before.
Was seating primers in some Win 223 cases and had one that just wouldn't seat all the way down.
Later came back to it and removed the primer and looked in the pocket. it had a raised portion in the bottom middle of the pocket to stop the primer from going all the way down with a ring around the inside where the edge of the primer would go, the but the anvil wouldn't clear the "hump".
It was made that way.

Sounds like you somehow got the primer out of a Berdan primed case.

The "bump" in the primer pocket is the anvil in the Berdan primer system.
Berdan primers don't have a built-in anvil like Boxer primers.

I used my pocket knife to cut the rim out of the primer pockets of military cases, worked great.
