Primers

I think, like the last time, any shortage is going to be caused by reloaders themselves. Instead of buying the couple of thousand when restocking they'll buy ten thousand.

I would be interested in learning what the capacity of primer manufacturers that is in production amounts to. I would expect small rifle primers to be in shorter supply than other types. I wonder how hard it is to convert production for different sizes? Surely, someone on this forum works at one of the manufacturers?

Primers (in fact all reloading components) are not exactly a mass consumers market and I would expect the universe of manufacturing resources to be limited.

When I was in college (mid-late 60's) I worked at a bicycle plant on the night shift. Supposedly there were presses sitting in the back of the factory that could be set up to produce cases on short notice but I never actually saw the machinery. There were definitly large items of some type that were never used sitting under tarps.

You obviously have the internet, so how can you not be able to find any more?

I got my last order of about 50,000 from Midway. 68 lbs worth as I remember it with the powder order. I don't think there was any problems getting any primers.

I have noticed that out of the two local places one is low on pistol primers ( CCI, Winchester, Etc, Magnum, standard) and the other is out completely. They have been for several weeks now. Rifle primers are overflowing from the shelves of both places.

No shortage here. I buy my primers at Graf's Reloading and they always have plenty on hand.

I do remember a primer shortage about 10 years ago. I was guilty of hording primers at that time, keeping 20K on hand. :uhoh:

no shortage at the places i buy them from. however i keep hearing everyone talk about a shortage. i think i may need to stock up.

The only 'shortage' I've seen is with Remington primers. It seems like they haven't been shipping out primers to anyone.

But I use Winchester and CCI, so it hasn't affected me.

I use Remington primers exclusively. Because of these periodic shortages, my club buys primers in quantities of 500,000 MINIMUM per order. Usually more!
We get 'em MUCH cheaper in those quantities as well!:)

IIRC, the last time I bought 50,000 at $12.50/1000

There is a real shortage of pistol primers in my neck of the woods.
I keep large supplies of primers at home (20-30k) for loading my pistol calibers but always pick up 1k when I go to the local shop so the stock at home is kept up. Last year I was paying $17 per case but this week it went up to $28 per case

What I heard is that Remington and Federal has not been shipping primers for past couple months so the distribution pipeline is empty. I heard CCI and Winchester continues to ship but the supply is not keeping up with the demand. The word is that it will be like this for next year or so and prices are not expected to go back down. Its very possible to see $35 for primers in next few months.

I just order 40k primers for less than $19.50 per case so I expect I will be okay for next two-three years.

I would like to know why Federal and Remington stopped shipping primers.

FWIW - 14 months ago . $15 per 1k . .8 months ago $17.99 per 1k, last weekend $22.99 per 1k. (cheapest local vendor) (Winchester primers, WLP, WLR, WSR)

PRIMER SHORTAGE

graf has plenty of primers.the gun shows seem to also.maybe there is a reason in some areas other than shortage.who's loading for the gov? they might be taking a larg chunk.also brazlian primers are coming in at a very good price.

I had to make a 80 mile round trip to a smaller town to get some small rifle primers this weekend. Our locale sportman's has been out for over two weeks and say they can't get any:fire:

Has anyone seen a shortage in primers?

Yes. Last weekend I called all the local stores, and only one had any Federal primers. I bought all they had.

Hopefully the shortage is just temporary.

Joe

Sportsman Outdoors in Oklahoma City are totally out of CCI 500 small primers. Bass pro shop had doubled their prices on this primer. So I went home and orderd from Midway and they are already here.

Federal runs the Lake City plant, currently, so (I'm guessing here), they may be concentrating or funneling (for the lack of a better term) their supply of primers/primer compounds to Lake City, to supply the military needs/demands.

With that said, I believe that the owner of Federal is ATK, who (I think) is the same people that own CCI.

Got some today CCI small pistol nice new black box $5.00 more then last year $26.95.The gun shop did have lots of them and said all reloading stuff way up.

I am going to a gun show next weekend. If the Powder/Primer guy is not there this time I am going to order some because I am under where I like to be on numbers. I try to buy from him, but I've got to have them. :)
