I understand that, aside from state statutes, there's nothing preventing someone from legally carrying while flying a private plane, and while on the airport property. This is regarding airports where you don't need to go through security.

Can anyone chime in one way or the other?

Sounds good to me ... since in Alaska you are REQUIRED to carry a gun. So long as you are not in the "sterile" area (ie, inside the TSA check area), you are good to go.

If you mean as the pilot in command I would agree.

If you mean as a passenger you are subject to the rules of the pilot.

I've never had to go through any security checkpoints to access the general aviation areas in any of the airports I've been to.

Depends of the airport. For example, Manassas, Virginia permits weapons anywhere on the airport (except for the control tower -it is a federal facility), but Dulles, about 15 miles away, does not allow weapons anywhere on the site (except transiting to/from the airport counter). I have spoken to the general counsel of the airport authority, and she has confirmed it is a misdemeanor to bring a cased weapon into either FBO and board a private plane. No exceptions. It doesn't make sense to me, but fuel has become so expensive at IAD I no longer fly in there. So it pays to check each airport.

Not true. No such requirement exists.

But you would be subject to carry and transport laws of NJ.

I never had an issue, but mostly in and out of uncontrolled airports... one of the reasons I learned to fly... problem is that most baggage compartments of 172's, or PA-28's not quite big enough for some of my rifle cases...
