I am about to sell a pistol to a private individual. We both live in KY, so I know the use of a dealer with an FFL is not required. But, how do I transfer the firearm out of my name and into the name of the buyer?

This is the first time I’ve ever sold a gun (I like buying much better) and just want to make sure I’m doing everything correctly.

Can't sell to a felon or other prohibited person.

Besides that, it looks like they can just hand you the $$, and you hand them the gun. Some folks prefer to also have a bill of sale for record of the transaction, but it does not appear to be required.

Since you are not "registering" this gun with any .gov and this is intrastate, this is just a private transaction.

Make a two copy bill of sale. One copy says, I, name of seller, did receive from name of buyer $xxxxx for the purchase of one make/model/serial number of gun, on date. You sign that one and give it to the buyer as a receipt for his money.

Second copy says, I, name of buyer, did receive one make/model/serial number of gun from name of seller, for the purchase price of $xxxxx on date. Buyer signs that copy and you keep it as a receipt for the gun.

Totally optional, but it will be a legal receipt.

Technically, as KY does not have firearm registration, the gun is not 'in your name' to begin with.

Ask to see his drivers license and CC permit if they have one, make a decent judgement by their appearance and mannerisms, then write up a bill of sale and have them sign it. Make a copy if you can. If *anything* looks out of place or raises a red flag, leave.

Also do this in a public place, not in yours or their home.
