"We, the people of these United States, rightfully petition our President, House of Representatives and Senate in affirmation of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

We affirm that said Amendment was established to define an individual "right of the People to keep and bear arms," and that there is no more important constitutional issue than that of defending the plain language and original intent of the Second Amendment.

The newly-emboldened Democrat Party, with Barack Hussein Obama leading the charge, is once again attempting to redefine the Second Amendment as a collective right only, as outlined on the ACLU's website under "Gun Control": "We believe that the constitutional right to bear arms is primarily a collective one, intended mainly to protect the right of the states to maintain militias. ... The ACLU therefore believes that the Second Amendment does not confer an unlimited right upon individuals to own guns."

Justice Joseph Story, appointed to the Supreme Court by our Constitution's principal author, James Madison, wrote in his Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833), "The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of the republic; since it offers a strong moral check against usurpation and arbitrary power of the rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them."

Indeed, the Second Amendment is "the palladium of the liberties of the republic," and those who fail to support it as such, and reject detractors like Obama, do so at great peril to themselves and the liberty of future generations of Americans.

Accordingly, we declare that gun ownership is not only an individual right, but a duty and obligation of all Patriots.

"

You know, if the petition weren't laced with invective for the Democrats I might sign it.

I see no point in using the polemicized "Democrat party" term, (They call themselves the Democratic Party) along with Obama's middle name, which is used to inflame passions, and the much-hated in some circles name of "ACLU," other than to indicate that this petition comes from "Hannitized" authors.

The Democrats, ACLU and Obama can be fairly criticized on their record without resorting to euphemized epithets. (Which incidentally is why I find Hannity and others like him to be unwatchable -- all the juvenile name calling...)

If someone were to write a calmly worded, yet reasoned petition along the same lines, I'd sign it in a heartbeat.

Nope. That's not a petition, that's going into a crowded theatre and yelling "Democrats Suck!"

I try not to miss opportunites like that... :neener:

I agree that the petition would have been better without the invective, but I fail to see the problem using Obama's middle name. Making the use of the name a problem only underscores the reason for using it.

Aside from it being his legal name, what is the reason for using it in conversation? Well, when paired with commentary like that above, it has a clear purpose, and that is to enflame the passions of a certain demographic who might conflate Obama with Osama, and brand him a Muslim terrorist for no other reason than his name.

It's counterproductive to reasoned discourse, and patently untrue. What you've said, is that by saying what I just did, means that It "Underscores" the need to conflate him with a Terrorist? I don't even understand what you're getting at.

At any rate, I'm not signing the petition, and I'm not voting for Obama.

Oh! And one more thing. Why, if you're trying to petition congress, would you attack the majority of congresscritters with needlessly polemicized rhetoric? That's a sure way to win friends and influence people...

It's like kids on a playground. If you try to tease me, and I ignore it, then the teasing stops because it's clear it doesn't bother me. Same with the middle name. It IS his middle name. So who cares? But if a big deal is made of using his middle name, then it appears that using it is having its desired effect.

If the former dictator of Iraq was named Saddam McCain, would we have a problem with using John McCain's last name?

This isn't a playground, it's the national stage, and the Hannitys of the world using his middle name as an epithet, influences people (for the wrong reasons,) no matter how Obama might handle it. (Ignore it, whatever.)

Anyway, I'm done with this topic.

I guess I put it in the same category as "Shrub" or "Junior". It was intended to belittle him, but because no one paid it any attention, it went away. It only influenced the people who wouldn't have voted for him anyway.
