in my are GM by a long shot, but then again that's not saying much....
bought my last rifle from Gander and I MIGHT think about doing so again but only if i decide not to do a lay-away. when i put my savage 12fv on layaway appearently they simply took it off the shelf and stuck it back into the factory packaging (plastic sleeve inside a cardboard box) with out even wiping it down!!!

when i went to pick the rifle up a few weeks later i nearly had a heartattack, and then had to tell the clerk that i'd be right back, asa it was a case of walk away for a few or start saying things that might get me tossed.
luckily the only part that is visibly effected by their lack of care is the triggerguard and they took more off of the price than it will cost me to replace that.
that being said i still prefer gander mountain to BassPro. I will never buy a gun from B.P. prices are too high and the customer service and soem of their corporate policy regarding guns just for lack of a better term "torque me off"

I just got back from GM & i must say it was a total waste of time. they were selling used guns with much noticed wear for more than the new one of the same model. they had like 5 new pistols & about 100 used ones. GM sucks.

I turned GM down for employment--here's why.
The manager of the local GM wanted me to work firearms on Sundays, becuase (1) I had an FFL; (2) I have a CCW; (3) I have business experience and (4) I am fully bilingual Spanish/English.
I actually was excited, and was planning to do the on-line application. Then, in walks a gentleman who needed to sell a pistol for some extreme financial emergency. I didn't pry. He worked out a best deal on this SIG with internal laser, extra high cap. mags. This pistol was extra-clean. Well, they screwed him down to 50% of what he had paid. Also, they gave him $125.00 for the $400.00 internal laser.
Their rationale was that used firearms sell for 75% of the new price and they have to make a profit. Then, as I stood there after the gentleman left with his cash, they logged the pistol and placed it in the display case for $50.00 less than the brand new SIG. They set the laser aside. The gunsmith was going to buy that.
A week later, the pistol was sold, and GM had turned a hefty 45% profit off this man's crisis. The gunsmith practically "stole" the laser for $125.00!
Bass Pro? They're not much better. While they don't buy used firearms, no trades, ect., they also they don't deal regarding prices. The service is pretty poor in my local Bass Pro. The workers, who know less than I, are so darned arrogant that it's sickening! One day a Bass Pro worker screamed at me, becuase I corrected his serious error...I mean serious error! He tried to tell a gentleman that he could fire the 7mm Express in a 7mm Magnum, but not the other way around?!?!?!?! Hello?!?!?!?!
At least at GM the workers "act" nice. I'm sure it's a front.
In the end, I no-longer do business with either. I know a little Mom and Pop Shop where I can get as good of prices and no written warranty...just their word of honor.
See, to me, honesty is EVERYTHING! Contracts aren't for poopola. A man's word and handshake still means something to me!
Now considering that I purchased just north of 20 firearms this year, I'd say GM lost big-time when they lost my business. Too, that I fire between 1000-2000 rounds of .45 ACP and 9mm per month, they lost again! The final way they lost is I would NEVER work for them nor suggest that ANYONE purchase from them. Not until they exercise integrity.

You just condemned a national company for the actions of one employee.
Honestly this is about like saying you will never go to another McDonalds again because you got some cold fries.
I don't really think there is anything wrong with what they did in that situation anyway. "It's a business not UNICEF." They offered to buy his gun and his laser at a severely reduced price. The only person to blame for this sour deal is the guy who sold it. I'll lowball people all day and if someone wants to sell me a gun for 50% its value (knowingly doing so) thats fine with me. Sounds like that guy knew how much his gun was worth and could have turned around and gone somewhere else. That was his decision. If you've never seen a deal like this go down before you might not realize...this happens everywhere. The gunstore will feel out the seller and then make a lowball offer.
The GM near me is actually quite nice. They have a cabinet with some police trade ins and a very nice selection of new guns. Their prices are ok.
When I see post like the one above I thank the Lord I don't work in retail anymore. Where people will come up with the dumbest problems and then scream at me because they have unreasonable expectations. No McDonalds will not buy you a new car if you spill your fries on the seat and yes if you bring a movie back 90 days late you WILL get charged a late fee. Grow up people. It doesn't make any sense to boycott a national chain because you don't like one of their employees.

Bass Pro Shop since we don't have the other around these parts that I know of.
Cabelas i would have said Gm in the past but a few bad experiances say no

I wish we had a GM here to compare. We have one of the Bass Pro "Flagship" stores. Huge store and the fine gun room is to die for but price-wise, I buy my guns at a smaller gun store on Fremont St.. BP has the selection but prices are really high.

I do get the occassional deal at the Bass Pro. I bought a NIB Ruger MK. II for $217 when they first opened. For ammo I buy online or Wallyworld since BP doesn't carry cheap commiegun ammo and I can usually shop around and get better deals. Some clerks are clueless, some know their stuff around here. I had a good flirt going with the girl who did the sale on the Ruger... she was seriously country-cute.

GM is OK, but I would not by firearms there as the prices are way too high. And as others have said, the used prices are ridiculous. You can do much better ordering on-line then going through your local FFL for transfer. The only big box store that I've found to have decent prices on guns is Sportman's Warehoue. I know they are not as many around the country as GM, Bass or Cabelas, but their prices seem fair on firearms and other stuff and their selection is good.

is 60 miles away...Haven't been there yet...But, the Gander Mountian here has been pretty OK...Yes, their prices are somewhat higher than you might get on the net, but less hassle, and you get to examine the gun...Prices on used stuff a litle high, but if it sits there for a while they lower the price. And when they have a sale the prices are usually pretty good... Have seen a couple salepeople that didn't much know what they were talking about, but in a "mass-market" store I don't expect much...I do my own research, if needed, beforehand....
Between my buddy and I we have some "oddball" rifles, and they're about the only place around that has some of these calibers (although they may only have one type/brand), except 8mm Mauser which they usually have exactly one box of (which I buy, and then I think they order 1 more!)...They also have a good stock of reloading supplies, accessories and such, and in general prices aren;t too bad.
In, short they're becoming my "one stop shop"...I DO patronize the local dealers, if possible, but they can't fill all my needs, and I don't have time to run all over getting stuff (GM is 5 minutes away, nearest "mom and pop" is 20 minutes away.)

I buy used guns, mostly. The Gander Mountain where I shop has used long guns in racks on the floor where everyone can see them. Bass Pro keeps all guns behind the counter. I like Gander for this reason.
Between the two I will take G.M - but I avoid both and support the local gun stores in my area - I get much better service.
The big chain's will run specials that are hard to match at times but for most guns the local stores will bargin to near the big store prices or match them .

Gander Mountain did the same damn thing to me. I put a gin in layaway and upon my first payment a insecption on the gun...the gun was open box. The serial number seal was already opended. While the guy purchasing the same gun only paying in full they broke the seal in front of him and he took it with him. I didnt want an open box item. I made them open a new gun without the broken seal.

Well, the closest Bass Pro carries hardly anything in regards to guns, just a few hunting rifles and revolvers. Honestly, the local Dunhams probably has as many guns, and they aren't an hour and a half away.
GM for me over Bass Pro, but much more likely that I will be at Dunhams or a local gunshop.

what got to me was not that it was the one from the shelf but that the rifle was not properly wiped down prior to storage! I KNOW that they have to be wiping down the long-guns that are out on teh floor every day or so if not multiple times a day, otherwise those gns would be covered in rusty handprints. so why didn't the guy engage his brain enough to know to do that before he stashed a lay away??
