Pro-Gun Travel Article In USA Today

Good article, but the resort sounds way to pricey. I'd bet dollars to donuts that if they dropped the price to something way more reasonable - say $100 for a couple of hours and opened it up to people wanting a diversion from Telluride's skiing, it would be booming.

But what do i know.

Valhalla has been written about in SWAT and one or two of the other gun mags.

Also been discussed here once or twice.

this triggers the bs meter

Great job," says shooting instructor Rob Pincus, a shaved-head, don't-mess-with-me type whose idea of outdoor recreation includes hunting 250-pound wild boars with a 33/4-inch knife.

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I this doesn't ring true. sounds like they're playing the reporter for a fool.

[The owner] supports a ban on gun shows and a mandatory waiting period for firearm purchases, and he opposes hunters' use of assault weapons.

HungSquirrel is right. Unless Mayhan was severely misquoted, he's just another guy who "doesn't get it." Not to mention the 9mm semiautomatic handguns they use there are evil, icky "assault weapons" with "high-capacity" magazines. :banghead:

Your context is messed up. That comment is from Mayhan, the machine shop guy from Ark, not Rob Pincus or Mr. Forman.

Those of you who read S.W.A.T. Magazine should recognize the name Rob Pincus. He's a regular contributor, and a hell of an instructor.

Elk Mountain and Valhalla are incredible. The shoot house is the most high tech shooting range I've ever been to, and that includes the ranges at the Olympic Training Center. The place really has to be seen to be appreciated. 360* of movement, staged audio scenarios and adjustable lighting/fog and other effects. The back end of the thing uses some of the same software that you'll find on high-end amusement park rides like at Universal Studios. Just walking through the maze is an experience, even when it's not powered up for a training scenario.

"the owner" is not correctly quoted. The quote was of another guest, Sheldon Mayhan.

" The day I check in, I'm joined by two other guests: Sheldon Mayhan, 36, a machine shop manager and weekend marksman from Van Buren, Ark..."

" "The chances of me ever getting into a gun battle with someone are slim to none. This isn't about violence; it's a recreational release from my everyday life," Mayhan says. A thoughtful, soft-spoken father of four, he supports a ban on gun shows and a mandatory waiting period for firearm purchases, and he opposes hunters' use of assault weapons. "

Bill,

The print version said 3 3/4 inch knife, not 33/4.

Also, I just read through the online version, the print one was edited up a little more, didnt even see the part about "assault weapons" on the print version I have here.

Awesome... if I'm not mistaken, the resort was featured on The Daily Show a while back. Looks like a really fun place.

I read one of those papers when it first came out. That was almost half a lifetime ago. One antigun article was all it took for me to boycott that rag forever. It was that sickening.

Ah, yes. USA Today -- the newspaper for people who move their lips when they read. :neener:  :neener:

Hey Guys... Couple of notes, in case it hasn't been cleared up:

1. My student that was interviewed did mention that he was in favor of some control of access to guns.. much to the pleasure of the virulently anti-gun correspondent.
2. The owner of Valhalla did not say those things.
3. While Elk Mountain Resort is expensive (you get what you pay for) and our Memberships are $52k, TRAINING at Valhalla is not any more expensive than quality training anywhere else.
4. My custom Mad dog "Pincus Thing" is 3.75 inches long and I have killed hogs with it... the largest I've taken with it WAS NOT 250 lbs, however.. probably around 175.

;)

Doc,

You're the first person I've heard say that in the many months tht I've been showing it or hearing from people who saw it... from housewives to SF operators, everyone has found it very funny.

I've seen it about 500 times and still laugh at parts.

When the producer called about the show, I told him that I wouldn't let them come out if their agenda was to make fun of guns, gun owners or the instruction that we provide... if, however, he wanted to make fun of the fact that we have put the most progressive reality based training center on the site of a 5-star resort, they were more than welcome.

The next time you watch it, pay close attention to his gun handling and safety when he has an actual gun in his hands....
