The revolver is pretty much new. I've put about 100 rounds of wally world target 44 magnums into it. Went shooting today and everything was smooth for about 18 shots. After the 18th shot I couldn't open the cylinder to unload the brass. The cylinder release lever comes forward but there's a dead stop on the cylinder. I had to hit the other side of the cylinder really hard with the bottom of my fist to get the cylinder open. I closed the cylinder (no problem closing) and again, lots of force to open up the cylinder. Forcing cone to cylinder gap present. Gun will cycle to next shot smoothly. Just cant open without hammering the cylinder. What do you guys think is wrong with my gun? I guess I'll call SW tomorrow if i cant figure it out. Thanks.

The above post is probably the culprit, but just so that you know, Smiths have a lefthand thread on the ejector rod. Righty loosey, lefty tighty.;)

Also, check for foreign matter under the ejector star, like brass shavings or powder fouling build-up.

Instead of hitting it hard (which can do damage), the way to unlock it is to stick a business card or similar under the cylinder (aka, bottom of the frame "window") to release the cylinder bolt (the silvery steel thing that sticks up to hold the cylinder in place for firing). Then you can trap the rod with your left thumb, and then spin the cylinder with your right hand to tighten it. Then it will open easily.

Once it is open, unload it and tighten the ejector rod as hard as you can by hand, but don't use a wrench or pliers on it - you will either bend it or mar it. S&W and others make a special tightening tool for this application, but you can work around it like this: if you are worried about it happening again, unthread it all the way, check that the threads are free of grease, and smear some Blue or Green loctite on it (NOT Red, the heat-release type - that would be bad). Re-thread it hand tight and let it set up 24 hours.

As Gun 4 Fun pointed out importantly, it is reverse threaded like a gas line, etc.

You guys are awesome. The ejector rod was loose. I guess the recoil power of the gun loosened it, or SW's quality assurance missed the loose rod. Either way, I'm happy I don't have to send the gun back. Awesome!!!

Glad you are fixed. Now, if it keeps happening, you will need to address it, but at least you won't let it ruin your shooting session or day. Welcome to the forum.

Chances are that if you had it loosen once, it will do it again. I've never been able to make one stick without loctite after it gave trouble.
