When the pistol is fired, the slide goes back far enough to cock the hammer but the fired shell remains in the chamber and the next round isn't stripped from the mag. There is no jam, but the semi-auto has become a single shot. To fire again, the slide must be manually racked. . My conclusion is that the slide is going back far enough to cock the hammer but not far enough to eject the spent shell. If this is correct, either the ammo is too weak or the recoil spring too strong?

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,

the automag?

So I assume that this is the AMT automag. With this in mind, I sold mine. I could find no end to the misfires, loading issues and fireing pin problems. I had the magnum cool load fun to plink but too many problems. The first gun I sold in my life. Just couldn't take it anymore.

Yes, AMT Automag in .22 Mag. I know the record of this pistol is mixed but I bought it because of the positive revew at GunBlast.com. I do like the pistol and hope to get it running. I may try a weaker recoil spring.

This may be a silly question, is the ejector still there? It's easy to loose during disassembly because it isn't retained at all except by the slide.

Other than that, give it a good cleaning, it does get filthy in there. And maybe try some different ammo, mine likes CCI or Federal.

Neat little gun, wish it was a bit more accurate.

There's a used AMT Automag in one of my local gun stores that I drool over every time I go in. I've almost walked out with it on 3 or 4 occasions. Such a sleek looking gun, and the .22 WMR is a wicked little cartridge. I too read the very complimentary review at Gunblast and it almost pushed me over the edge. So far I've resisted. Too bad they can be so moody.

PowderBurn, if you don't mind my asking, what shop has it? I wouldn't mind a second for spare parts if nothing else if the price is right. What was it going for?

Biggest problem I had with mine misfeeding was the magazines. I picked up a new one and it's been almost 100% ever since. I'd like to find springs for the other 2 mags tho.

I noticed you were from Minneapolis in your first post! It's The Gun Stop in Minnetonka (http://www.gunstop.com/).

It's a small shop in a strip mall, and his primary business is reloading supplies. But they've managed to pack quite a few new & used guns into the back of the shop. I haven't checked in the last three weeks (been staying away on purpose!), but the tag on the gun then said $359. If it's still there, he may come down a bit on the price as it has been there since last September/October. Prices on new guns are usually pretty fair.

Could be a weak or broken extractor spring. Could be a too heavy slide spring. Could be the hammer binding up like mine did.

I had Black Snowman work my Automag over, and now it feeds and shoots great! Mine is an old original Automag II as well, so I was surprised that the quality control of construction on it was so crappy.

Brownells now sells springs for the gun. We swapped out the hammer, mainspring, trigger. Didn't do the extractor and the recoil spring was way to long, so didn't do it either. Then, that's when Snowman noticed why the hammer was binding up. It was cause the chamber in the frame where the hammer's guide rod goes wasn't deep enough/long enough/smooth enough/etc. He chucked it up in a drill press and worked it over for a bit.

Now it actually functions reliably and is a fun gun to shoot!

I have one of those AMT Automag IIs myself. It jams quite frequently and so I don't shoot it much. Maybe with more range time it would break in and run better.
