Tried my restored 11-48 at the range today.

I had 2 boxes of ammo.
1. #4 1 1/4oz
2. #8 7/8oz

#1 kicks really hard, if I just drop those rounds in chamber they go in with just a slight tension. But it cycles action 100%, I shot 10 with no stoppages (other than my shoulder)

#2 otoh recoils much better but it won't cycle action reliably. If I just load 1 - it won't lock action back 4 out of 5 times and 1 time it did lock it back but shell was in a chamber. When I loaded more - it worked couple rounds but then it put fresh shell against fired one (fired one in a chamber)

What should I look for? Is that just the way it is? Since I planned this gun for hunting - heavier loads is probably OK since this is what I'm going to use, but I'm curious how to make it work with lighter ones..

To adjust for light or heavy loads, remove the fore end cap, remove barrel, then remove the first ring. It will have instructions on it for which side goes up for light and down for heavy loads.

11-48 does not have this, it's only 1 position. I think I found similar topic in archives, need to try more lube on a tube thing :)

Right now I run it pretty much dry, wiped with sligthly oiled rug..

7/8oz of shot is a light load even for many modern autos to cycle. When the 11-48 was designed, a light 12ga load would have been 1 1/8oz. I wouldn't do anything to the gun until you try some loads a bit heavier.

You need to use at a minimum a 1 1/8 oz load. These guns are recoil operated, no gas system. Also lube the mag tube with a light coating of 30 weight motor oil, take the spring off and apply the oil and then put the spring back on. It should work well. the 7/8 oz doesn't generate enough force to cycle the action.
