I hit the 250 round mark today on my new walther pps and I ran into a problem. It is probably just a newbie mistake though. I have been loading my magazine, and then putting it in the gun, but when I rack the slide to load the first round it does not chamber all the way and is sitting half in the chamber half in the magazine. Any ideas?

That's what my Kahr K9 does if I try to chamber a round by racking the slide. Of course, Kahr tells you to chamber a round by using the slide release, not by racking the slide manually.

Is there any chance you might be "riding" (i.e., making hand contact with) the slide on its forward stroke? The action is designed to work at full speed. Pull it to the rear forcefully, completely let go of it and let it fly forward under the spring pressure.

Lone Haranguer I think you are right, I am bringing the slide forward with my hand instead of letting go, also I think sometimes im only pulling back 3/4 of the way when I rack it.

You can't break it by pulling the slide all the way back and letting it "slam" home. That's what it does everytime you pull the trigger.

I also lock the slide back and release the slide with the thumb release sometimes. On reloads at the range, I always do that as it is locked open anyway. Once locked open, it can be done one handed, pointed downrange and allow almost immediate target reacquisition. You need to be able to rack the slide and have it chamber 100% reliably. It's a life saving skill that's easy to master. That way, you'll not feel a need to have a chambered round all the time.
