I shoot left-handed and have always used traditional stocks. I am thinking of acquiring a right-handed 300 mag Weatherby Lazermark with the Monte Carlo stock. I read an article that says the Monte Carlo stock is designed to deflect recoil away from the face. If that is true, wouldn't it actually direct recoil towards the face of a left-handed shooter? I don't want to break my face!

btw, I have been lurking on this forum for many months but this is my first post. I have been blessed by the wealth of information on this site.

The monte carlo stock has a raised cheekrest on the left side of the stock for right handers, right? So the right side of the stock is just smooth. At least that's how it is on my custom springfield .270. I shoot it lefty and it's fine... it's not like there's anything on the right side of the stock to channel recoil into your face. :)

that was my thinking, but the article I read made me think if recoil is being redirected, it must be going somewhere. btw, the article was by Chuck Hawk, and it seems people either love him or hate. I tend to agree with him more often than not, but I can't comment on the physics involved with rifle recoil.

The advantage of the monte carlo is the size of the area to place your cheek, since we are all built a little different the increased area allows for more consistent placement of the cheek, or cheek weld. I have a left hand bolt gun [REM 700 BDL] with a monte carlo stock, it fits so much better when shooting left handed. I shoot rifle ambi and notice whenever shooting a monte carlo stock I do better when I can rest my cheek firmly on the stock whichever side it's on. My right handed friends can't seem to shoot this gun well right handed. The few that take the time to learn to shoot it left handed tend to do better. I don't know if I would allow that to affect the purchase of a gun, put then I shoot with either hand.

After having to do all the right handed things left handed, it seems most leftys are ambidextrous. Most right handed people can't cope with left handed things because they rarely have to.

I can work a right side bolt pretty quickly, but a righty would probably have trouble with a left handed bolt gun.

If the Weatherby feels right (no pun intended), buy it.
