when becoming engaged in conflicts where you don't know the whole story. I ran across this article on another list I am on. The lesson here is to make sure you understand the whole situation before leaping into the fray.

'I'm being kidnapped, and love it'

AMSTERDAM Police officers in the southern Dutch town of Brunssum
leaped into action at the weekend to prevent what must be one of the
most terrifying crimes women face today: being bundled into a van by
strangers and driven away.

When a passer-by saw a bare-footed woman being held by a man in the
Limburg town, the police responded imediately. According to the report
the woman's hands were tied behind her back and her "abductor" had his
hand over her mouth. Two other men were standing around, apparently
waiting at a nearby van.

A team of 20 officers took up the pursuit and tracked the van to the
city of Heerlen. The three male occupants, aged 36, 39 and 58 and all
from Heerlen, were arrested.

But based on testimony from the men and their "victim", the police
established no crime had taken place. The "kidnapping", RTL Nieuws
reported on Sunday, was a sexual role-playing fantasy, in which the
woman was a voluntary participant.

insert <evil chuckle> Been there, done that...

Things are not always as they seem. Non-involved witness were correct in calling the cops, who responded as they should. IMAO fault lies with the "abductors" in not ensuring there was nobody about to see the games in play.

Sure does seem like a great way to get someone hurt -- or killed -- depending on the speed at which law enforcement arrives on the scene.

I often use an example similar to this about jumping into someone else's problem. Imagine being in a park and stumbling across a rape in progress. Turns out its just a role playing fantasy, or people who like to get public and or aggressive.

Also, there's lots of undercover cops out there. Imagine looking down an alley and seeing a scruffy homeless type person holding a gun on a guy in a suit! Could be mugging, a drug deal going bad, undercover cop about to arrest somebody...Um....maybe some more rape fantasy role playing....ew.

Kinda like child abductions. How do you know that that screaming 10 year old is throwing yet another tantrum, and dad has decided to get the hell out of there and go home? You Don't.

But, you catch my drift. It sounds harsh, but one reason I won't get involved in other people's problems is you just don't know *** is going on....so stay out of it for the most part.

Now, if you do see something, don't do anything, and it turns out to be a real rape, robbery, kidnapping, yeah, you're going to feel bad about it.

It's a catch 22.

I say interfere. Looks like a duck, quacks like a duck... wanna take the chances it's a duck, or a goose?

Besides, it adds to the realism for them if their realistic scenario comes to a realistic "positive" end :)

You said-"insert <evil chuckle> Been there, done that..."
Well I hope the three guys treated you nice!

ROFLMFAO!!!!! +1 CT.

Too bad just plain stupidity isnt a crime in some places. But then the jails would be full.

Something similar

I was driving through town one day, and see a young girl apparently being savaged by a Doberman. She is screaming, the dog has her by the arm and is shaking her.

I am unarmed, except for a small pocket knife, but I figure if I can get my arm around the dog's neck, I can get a few good stabs in before he turns on me. I slam on the brakes and jump out.

You guessed it, they were just playing. I figured it out and jumped back in the car before they saw me. I had the headline "Hero pet saves young girl from child molester" running through my head, along with "Savage attack kills beloved family pet". I dunno. Sometimes it is hard just trying to figure out what the right thing is.

Or, to paraphrase Mas Ayoob - If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck... And is stupid enough to impersonate a duck during duck season...

If you get your rocks off mimicking a felony, fine. But if you do it in public, expect people to react as if it's an actual felony, ie call the police. Same thing goes for the idiots that rob a bank with a bb gun or point their cell phones at armed police officers, and then get shot. Well, what did you think was gonna happen?
