Gentlemen,
WW2 Started in Sept. 1939. Ordnance starts to speed up Production on the M1 Garand.

Guys try to post some data on what you might have found of interest or some different data you have read about. This is one way to learn the History of the M1 Garand.

Unfortunately the letter doesn't distinguish between Winchester and Springfield Armory... just generic Garands. I have a '41 Win and was told by an old gun show Garand expert that it was "pre-war" but I can't imagine how he'd know that.

ShunZu:

If I recall correctly, the US entered the war on 8 Dec 41. So, there were only 23 days left in 1941 to be "war production". You have 342:23 odds that your 1941 M1 is "pre-war".

Gentlemen,
The FIRST M1 Garands by Winchester didn't get out until Mar. of 1941. They were always behind in their production.

Great info, thanks. Is there any way to determine the life's history of these old warhorses based on their serial number? In other words, is there a magic database someone maintains to find out if the M1 or other old pieces such as the '03 lived their lives in such-and-such war theater? I have an old '03 serial number 47XX in addition to my Garands that I'd love to learn some of its/their history. Thanks in advance.

ShunZu,
Sorry to say but NO. Almost all of the files were either destroyed or lost over the years. It took me over 30 years to come up with the files I have. Some are great other's don't have what we all want.
Thanks again
