Dang it. My husband has me hooked on Fox News now :uhoh: So while putting my stupid sore ankle up for awhile this afternoon I was watching, and they had President Bush's speech on. He was stumping for some congressman in Georgia, IIRC. Usual rah-rah campaign speech, occasionally remembered to stick in the candidate's name and say he trusted him, etc.

But there was one little phrase that he kept using over and over. It was "the professionals who are protecting our homeland". I heard it the first time and didn't think much of it except that he was perhaps trying to make a super-respectful counterpoint to John Kerry's nutty no-joke about Iraq. But he kept using that phrase.

Again. And again.

Now if I'd known something this odd was coming up I'd have thought to count, and I'm too lazy and impatient to go back and try to listen to that whole speech to count them now. :neener: But this phrase disturbs me.

First, it occurs to me that the counterpoint is not to Kerry's comment, but perhaps to the Minutemen, whom the feds are not real fond of.

Second, it occurs to me that the other "amateurs" who protect our homeland are we gun owners, and that while he probably didn't have this in mind (giving the benefit of the doubt) it ended up sounding an AWFUL lot like 'the only people who ought to be armed and protecting our homeland are the professionals'.

Did anybody else catch that? Any thoughts?

I seem to recall another "professional" that had a mention in the news...

I hope the President's professionals are more.... professional.

(Sorry, bad joke. It's late and I should be sleeping...)

Didn't see it, but you are right on the money. Anytime such things become repetitious in a speech or presentation a flag should go up and the whole thing be examined closely. I could cite numerous other examples in recent history.

springmom you could be right there , it would do him some good to be reminded that once upon a time others who called themselves "Minutemen" who weren't professionals either yet they fought for our freedom and played a huge role in the establishment of this country . It seems to me he resents the success and determination of those who aren't professionals , perhaps because for one thing they aren't under his control as Commander and Chief , perhaps because they make him look like the fool , traitor and or coward he is when it comes to the issue of illegal immigration .

While the immigration problem didn't start on his watch as POTUS it certainly has reached levels that are more alarming to the American public than ever before , yet he sits and protects the Status Quo as did his predecessors for decades . If the problem and tide of illegals aren't stopped soon our Nation will lose it's national identity as at no time in history has the influx of immigrants from anywhere in the world brought about the forced adaptation of Americans to the immigrants natural language , as we have seen in many parts of the southwest and is spreading throughout the country with regards to the Spanish language .

I don't understand how he can give all these speeches about protecting our freedoms and way of with a straight face while every single day 1,000+ invaders cross our borders adding to the already tens of millions here who bring with them all of the problems of Mexico . Corruption , illiteracy , crime and poverty are about the only things these immigrants have to offer to America yet he wants to "Stay the course" with 150,000+ troops in a foreign land when they are more needed here at home on our borders .

Won't it be a fine thing when brave American service men and women return home after liberating Iraq only to be preyed upon in their neighborhoods and even homes by illegal Mexicans who are known Rapists and murderers .

Reminds me of Daschle's comment on the TSA: "you cannot professionalize until you Federalize.":barf:

Of course, his constituents sent him packing...:D

Didnt see it but sounds to me like Bush is just using the word to suck up to the military. ''Kerry must hate them but Bush has so much respect for them'' type tactic.

I think it also goes to the government's view of the people, "They're so stupid, we better repeat it a lot otherwise no one will get it."

Its funny that one might equate professional with government. That seems like a lopside equation. I always thought it had something to do with expertise...

Hell, the military is probably the only professional group in the entire US government lol. When I was in the military, at least we got the job done... one way or the other.

Good catch btw... typical poltico crap... if it was reversed them dems would be cowtowing just the same as Bush is.

I think you're reading much more into it then was there. The professionals comment was clearly a reference to the military and a jab at Kerry.

I don't think it had any subliminal anti-RKBA meaning at all.

He did that with the word "authorities" during Katrina. Every other sentence was "obey the local authorities, respect the local authorities, stay put until the local authorities tell you you can leave", etc.
