Illustrates the intelligence of some, stupidity of others. Kern county is almost a defacto shall issue county.

Program Teaching Kids About Guns Draws Fire

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,171568,00.html

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Five-year-old Jeff Jagels, of Bakersfield, Calif., is just starting school in Kern County (search), but he already knows what to do when he sees a gun.

And other 5-year-olds in his neighborhood are about to learn what Jagels knows, too.

"Stop, don't touch, leave the area, tell an adult," is what the youngsters are told by cartoon character Eddie Eagle.

The Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program is a free National Rifle Association project that teaches kids what to do when they see a gun.

And Jeff Jagels' father thinks it’s a great idea.

“I realized that this thing is incredibly effective, and I became determined to get one into every kindergarten class in Kern County along with the accompanying teaching materials,” Edward Jagels said.

Jagels, who is the Bakersfield district attorney, is a member of the NRA (search) and said he was astonished by his son’s reaction. His little tyke wanted to watch the videotape over and over again, and quickly repeated the instructions sung by Eddie Eagle in the cartoon.

Jagels thought the project was so good, he took it to the superintendent of Kern County Schools, who liked the idea.

“The fact that we're teaching a child not to touch a gun, to walk away from it, to tell an adult about the gun, that's going to make a child safer,” said Superintendent Larry Reider.

But others disagree. Local emergency room doctor Art Kellermann has treated his share of juvenile gunshot victims. He’s skeptical of any plan that puts the burden on a young child to make a critical judgment about firearms.

“Nobody should trust Eddie Eagle to make their child any safer than before they took the program," Kellermann said. “Rather than try over and over again to gun-proof our kids, I think we ought to child-proof our guns."

The Kern County superintendent will be sending Eddie Eagle tapes out to the district next week — but says it will be up to the individual schools whether to use them.

“Nobody should trust Eddie Eagle to make their child any safer than before they took the program," Kellermann said. “Rather than try over and over again to gun-proof our kids, I think we ought to child-proof our guns."

So ... we should make all ovens and stoves too high for children to reach. That way we wouldn't have to tell the children the fire is hot and can hurt them.

I understand that there are laws about how we handle swimming pools in our back yards ... laws meant to "childproof" the swimming pool. Good thing too - if we didn't have those laws, there could be a drowning death some day.

What an idiot.

Right, doctor, good thinking! Education does not work; is this what they teach in medical skuls now?

Children should not be educated regarding hazards--medicines, water, electricity, traffic or guns. Children should be encased in bubble wrap and stay inside and watch television.

We know this works, doc. Remember "The Little Rascals"? When Froggy gets hit by the car playing baseball, the Little Rascals didn't go on a campaign to ban cars or encase the world in foam. No, the Little Rascals went on an educational program--stop, look both ways and look again (or something like that).

The world is a dangerous place, gravity hurts, corners are sharp and guns are loaded. The world is not a violence-free petting zoo, even in California.

Do as we do out here, teach children to overcome, not surrender! :)

Is this the same "Art Kellermann" from the infamous Kellermann study? Anyone around the area that could research that?

Let's stop putting brightly colored labels on bottles of drain cleaner too while we're at it. Don't want kids to think it's kool-aid.

Oh wait, that's why we teach our kids to read so they'll know what's up.

I think doctors should have warning labels tattoo'd on their foreheads. More kids die in hospitals than from gunfire so obviously hospitals, doctors and nurses are more dangerous.

He’s skeptical of any plan that puts the burden on a young child to make a critical judgment about firearms.
If his judgement about children's ability to learn about danger was correct we would have gone extinct within 2 weeks. It's amazing how otherwise intelligent people will throw their education out the window when it comes to thinking about guns.

They find one single person who is "skeptical" of the idea and thinks that his abstract solution would be better and they call that "under fire"?

“Nobody should trust Eddie Eagle to make their child any safer than before they took the program," Kellermann said. “Rather than try over and over again to gun-proof our kids, I think we ought to child-proof our guns."

It's bizzaro world logic! Seriously, how do you argue with that? It's like arguing with an alien.

I'm playing "Spot the misused word" today ...

I will talk to you of Art....

Art Kellermann is not just a concerned emergency room doctor.
When Prof. James Lindgren demonstrated that Michael Bellesiles'
anti-gun skreed Arming America (Knopf, 2000) was riddled with
errors in fact and opinion on every page, Kellermann accused
LIBERAL Democrat GUN CONTROL ADVOCATE James Lindgren
of being some kind of a secret agent of the vast right wing
conspiracy against Michael Bellesiles. Kellermann is blindly
anti-gun and has a long track record as such. He self-
identified with Michael Bellesiles fer cryin out loud.

A child exposed to Eddy Eagle is less likely to treat a gun as
a toy. Only Kellerman could find anything wrong with that.

If you child proof your guns, you are protecting everyone's children from your gun. If you gun proof your child you are protecting your child from everyone's gun. No wonder non gunowners want to go the "make everyone child proof their guns" route. It takes no effort on their part and puts the responsibility/ right infringement on others. Problem is, it's really not possible. Sometimes guns go missing, or are stolen and discarded, or used in a crime and discarded. Not a good idea to thik we shouldn't teach children what to do if they run into said gun. Not if you love your child. Of all the progun/antigun issues, I can't see how this is a controversy. I think the real issue is that they don't want the NRA (or it's influence) in schools. That's their brainwashing ground.

Exactly. You wouldn't hear the same people complaining if you took the very same video with the only change being who it was distributed by and thus it was described as "The Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program is a free Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence project that teaches kids what to do when they see a gun."

The question is if that happened how many people on our side of the issue would then be complaining about the video being distributed in our schools?

This story has amazing similarities with the "sex education" that so many liberals have pushed on children in public schools.

They expect us to "child proof" our guns, so that our children don't have to use their brains. They know that the less you use your brain in common dangerous situations, the less apt you are to use it when questioning the laws they pass.

On the other hand, instead of teaching our children that they should go get vasectomy's (which is the equivalent of putting a lock on your gun, no pun intended) they try to educate kids on sex. Why is it that they get to decide if you can use a gun, but they let you personally decide when/how to have sex?

Both types of guns are just as dangerous. The only difference is that the widespread use of a handgun protects our rights, while the uncontrolled use of the other gun simply perpetuates their beloved "Great Society".

I for one will never allow myself to live in the world of "1984".

Education is the answer, not prohibition.

Gah!

“Nobody should trust Eddie Eagle to make their child any safer than before they took the program," Kellermann said. “Rather than try over and over again to gun-proof our kids, I think we ought to child-proof our guns."

Oh, you worthless mother????er, you idiot, you absolute MORON. How dare he blame the metal and wood (or plastic?)

Good god, I feel my IQ dropping just reading such idiocy.

how exactly do you child proof a gun?

short of putting a stun device in it that will give a nasty shock to anyone under the age of 18 that picks it up? of course this amazing piece of technology will also say in a stentorial voice, "you are not yet an adult! step away from the gun!"
